Hi there, I'm new to this forum so bear with me..

I'm trying to encode an interlaced pal movie, using a new install of win98se and gordianknot 0.27

I did everything EXACTLY as in the Gordianknot guide for DivX 5

When I try to do a compressibility check it fails within seconds and when I do an encode without it it gives me a movie of about 150-250 MB
which looks like crap.

The movie is a 90 minute movie, Battlestar Galactica.
The source is interlaced Pal, aspect ratio 4:3

This is my Lastcompcheck.avs:

I had the same problem with Gordianknot 0.26 on a previous install of win98se.

But a few months before this problem arose I was encoding movies just fine...Please help !

Not sure but I think that might mean a codec problem. Try reinstalling DivX 5 and see if that helps (someone correct me if I'm totally wrong).

It sure looks like a problem, with no first pass log file produced. The possibilities are either codec not installed or incorrectly installed, or a problem with the .avs script (or AviSynth not installed).

You can check both pretty easily.

For .avs script, merely open it with any .avi player. If you see video, then the script works.

For DivX 5, start VirtualDub, select Video...Compression from menu, and see if DivX 5 is in the list of codecs.

(Just a possibility, since a few folk have had this problem: with 0.27, you need to install both the rip pack and the system pack.)

I found the flaw thanks to your post.

The DivX codec is installed fine and shows up on virtualdub

Yes I did install both the rippack and the systempack in the required order.

Here's the catch:

When opening the AVS file in both Zoomplayer and WMP (6.4) all it displays is a line saying that height is not even and the error is at line 36.

Now it turns out that the cropping resulted in a uneven height and apparently the fast deinterlacing function requires an even height.

I changed one pixel and it is happily decoding now..

Thanks for the help !

First of all odd crop values are a big no no.crop(12,82,700,410) will work much better. Adding separatefields() to your crop will produce frames of different size and could very will be the source of your problem, even though this should be canceled by the SelectEven().
Second, 576x304 is a 16:9 resolution so you must have selected PAL 16:9 by mistake. You should have something like 512x384 in the resize.
Third, any other choise of deinterlacing than fast deinterlace will produce much better quality, but is considerably slower.

No, I encoded it and the resolution is fine...just a bit to low for my taste so I'm re-encoding it a step higher, and now I'll use the pro codec. (I switched to the standard codec before this thread to check if it was a bad codec problem)

The result was a bit too unsharp so I'm re-encoding it. It is a very highly compressable movie (lots of darkness in outer space) so I'm upping the resolution to 640xsomething

Perhaps it's one of those widescreen movies that have a 4/3 SAR (is that the correct term? or should it be DAR?).
