2C:cool::cool:L's Cheat Sheets & Guides List J
Updated: July 15, 2005 (1 http://img54.exs.cx/img54/7651/newanima.gif entry)
Last Update: February 4, 2005
I've learned a lot in these great forums of Doom9 since I've registered in Oct2002. My cheat sheets and guides are my way of giving back to the community. It's hard to come up with a standard guide to fix everything as DVDs are authored a million ways. Though some of these guides maybe DVD specific, you might find a tip or two that will work on another DVD I haven't posted. I strongly believe in learning through examples. All movies I backup are NTSC region 1.
As time goes by, my cheat sheets and other guides will be scattered around the forum. Here is a consolidated list of my accomplishments to help you seek, learn, and burn. Let me know if it worked for you.;)
You take the BLUE pill, the story ends...you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the RED pill, you stay in Wonderland and I'll show you how deep the rabbit hole goes. quote from Morpheus to Neo to 2C:cool::cool:L to you, The Matrix.
If you have any questions, please post it in associated thread or PM me.
* Movies that originally contained Aspect Ratio Selection Menus
OBS:(LETE: Guide is old due to current tools now automating them.
MOVIE GUIDES (NO TRANSCODING OR ENCODING):
Note: These cheat sheets were created before DVD2One 1.0.1, Instant Copy 7.0, and DVD95Copy was introduced. Some of them,DVD-splits or with credits taken out, would be done differently now using the programs mentioned as they can be used to keep your whole DVD. Keep in mind that these cheat sheets are at original video quality. The ones with bypassing aspect ratio selection menu procedures are still good to learn and use.
For you people who are looking for a cheat sheet on a specific DVD on bypassing the Aspect Ratio Menu (widescreen or fullscreen), try my generic guide on getting rid of it. If you have any success, post what DVD you were working on and what it's region code is in that thread.

hi 2cool, and your nick says it all !
This is invaluable information you provided with your great cheat sheets. Now I was willing to dive a bit into corresponding region 2 titles to see the differences. I plan to try Lilo & Stitch tonight (if wife doesn't start yelling...) and see where the differences are compared to your region 1 sheet. Man, I'm not quite sure I can handle it as well as you did, but your information should help me I guess.
Thanks again for your work.

Just wanted to touch bases with you to inquire if you are referring to region 1 "The One". If so, I can look into as I have an original copy. Mine is a special edition with widescreen and fullscreen.

In your cheat sheet you tell the user to "region free". I assume that you are using it as a verb. How do I do that?

At the time my cheat sheet in question was written, I was using Smartripper 2.41 instead of DVd Decrypter. I was making sure that when you ripped the files to your harddrive, the files were already purged/removed of RCE or Region Coding Enhancement. And what is RCE you ask? Here's a Regional Coding Enhancement FAQ (http://www.dvdtalk.com/rce.html) for you.
Since I worked only with region 1 NSTC DVDs, I put in a step to make sure that all IFOs were free of RCE. If detected then you would take it out and save the IFO and BUP.
To "Region Free" a IFO, first select a IFO file in IFOedit. Look at the bottom buttons, you'll see one that says "Region Free". With your IFO highlighted and selected, press this button. You will get a message saying if you do or don't have RCE in this IFO. You must remember to save any IFO that you had RCE detected and removed.
Now, I have been using DVD Decrypter strictly as of late and it does a better job on removing RCE during ripping so that step can be optional.

Thanks for the link, Goldfinger, but I'm talking about actually taking DVD subtitles from one disc, and putting them on another. Not a text-based subtitle format, like SSA, SRT, etc.

You need to read the guide (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=50245) again. All commands with "Break" in them need to be changed to jump to first converted Post Command.
If you are still confused, post your original commands in your PGC Command Table for title 2.

Sorry for the late response but I've tried with no success. I read somewhere at IFOedit.com that Derrow would have dabbled into this area if he had more information on how it works.

What about Derrow... is he just checked out or what...? Has 321 Studios locked him down completely with confidentiality employment agreements...?
I read he only answers email when people donate now so I sent a nice not on PayPal with $10 thanking him for his great program and asked one question...
NO REPLY at all... was a little diappointed... Come to think of it no acknoledgement from DVDDECRYPTOR's $10 donation either...
If these guys don't a have a form letter they can send as a reply to a PAYMENT in their account that seems a LITTLE ungratful... makes me think twice about donating again real soon...

I should not complain... I am very appreciative for the tools... I just know that PayPal sends an payment message for each payment received... The idea of having even just a form letter response to kick out as he is clearing his box would make sense...
I would sure be more likely to send more donations to someone that seemed to appreciate getting them...
But hey... thats me... I send thank you cards at Christmas too...

I tried to apply 2COOL's Formula 51 cheat sheet to bypass the ARM screen for the Columbia Tristar movie 'I-Spy' but was not successful. I could fix the FullScreen option to point to the WideScreen title, and normally was satisfied with that before, but now am itching to accomplish the cooler next step, argh!grrh!. By any chance, has anyone done work on this movie?. TIA.

Can I use 2COOL's method "How To Do a Movie-Only DVD using DVD95Copy" (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=49087) with InstantCopy ?

Well, Murphy was tiresome, but Wilson OK. I dont expect too much from a mindless comedy anyway. But I did find the answer to my problem in 2COOL Joe Dirt cheatsheet. Feel cool (not 2, maybe 1/2 ) to successfully get rid of that annoying ARM screen. Thanks, 2COOL for your super guides.

I have successfully bypassed the annoying stuff but if my movie starts playing without stopping at the main menu how do i make it do so?the original movie does this and is not a result of any changes i have made to the ifo.

What exactly have you done and which titleset contains your menus? You mention a "but if"...I assume you mean "and" instead.

Has anyone sorted out LIVE WIRE... This one has 4 choices not just wide screen and full... It has VTS 1 with full screen rated or unrated in two different PGC sets. Wide screen also has the same in VTS 2... I am trying to make it so that when I select PLAY I get the movie in Full Screen UNRATED which is VTS 1 - PGC 2 - Title 2...
So far all I seem to be able to do is kill the selection screen and hang the movie upon selecting play...

2Cool, Do you know where I can find info on the syntax of
Pre and post Commands?
I have a DVD that starts into the main movie. After the movie starts
you can select root menu, and one of the menu buttons is "Return to Movie". I can make the DVD start with the root menu, but I havn't been able to make the movie button start the movie...

To better help you on this, I need to understand your unedited navigations in your original DVD. Play your DVD using IFOedit and watch the Status window on what it displays. This tells you where the video clip playing is residing. Can you post back on what is being played and what the status field says from DVD insert to main movie plays? Just curious also if there is any miscellaneous clips after main menu and main movie.

It also helps if you remember, you are looking at a computer program. While we can describe the meaning of each command (which is done in several DVD authoring books) that is the same as looking at a book on assembly programming. You must look at the command within the context of the whole program.

I Agree, being a programmer I am having lots of fun with this.
I am curently playing with the new movie "Basic".
I get the disk to start directly with the Main menu and skip the
disk intro by changing The First Play PGC in the VIDEO_TS.IFO
file to "(JumpSS_VTSM) Jump to Titleset Menu , Title Set 1, Title nr 1, root menu". But still trying to figure how how to get it to
jump right into main movie after the play button is selected.
When main movie is selected, it first plays Title 1, chapter 1 & 2 from the Video Manager Menu (VMG) then jumps back to the original
title set and plays Title2 chapter 1, a blank clip about 5 seconds
long (why I don't know!) then it plays title set 1, the main movie.

As it is a program, is there a tracing/debugging technique that anyone can share?. I am learning litle by litle thru the examples in cheatsheets but usually got lost in the navigation from VMG to VTSM to VTS and back to VMG. If I need a command(s) that can stop the playing and output some status, what would that be?.

Wouldn't that be nice if DVD players had an "int 3" (debug trap), but they don't. All you have is the front panel, and experience. A player like my Sony shows you which titleset, title, and chapter is playing, so from there you can locate the PGC.
What would be nice is for someone to write a decompiler for this. IfoEdit comes close, but you have to make notes and hop around a lot. It would be nice to see the whole disk on one (long scrollable) page with invented tags for reference.

Have you noticed that on most movies there is a short blank clip that makes up the last chapter of the movie and when you reach this chapter you typically jump to the menu.
However on some movies the last chapter is just the end of the movie and credits. In this case you can not select NEXT in IFOEDIT at all you must instead wait until end of chapter. I believe Bad Boys 2 & Gigli are both like this.
However (No.2) in this second scenario if you select NEXT CHAPTER with your stand alone when you get the the credits (last chapter) you start the movie over or sometimes jump to the next Title.
How can I solve this. When I get the the credits, I want to be able to hit NEXT CHAPTER and have it navigate to the menu.
Regards.. Jeff

...or sometimes jump to the next Title.Yes, it's common that some DVDs have post company video logos or even FBI warnings after movie play. These titles can be easily blanked out or bypassed so that your menu gets to display quicker.
How can I solve this. When I get the the credits, I want to be able to hit NEXT CHAPTER and have it navigate to the menu. A unposted guide I came up with to insert a new blank cell, if the Titleset doesn't have one, into the titleset VOBs and be configured as the last chapter is being tested. ;)
If it works well, you could substitute the new blank cell VOB with a "Insert next disk" VOB or a personal video clip VOB. Ohh, the possibilities that can be acheived and we don't even have to re-author. ;)
Update: Here's those guides.
Inserting a Blank Cell at end of Title (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=69347)
Adding a Insert Disc 2 clip (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=69346)
Enjoy! :D

Welcome to the forum! :D
I don't know what to say as I have done a theatrical & extended backup myself. I was writing the guide in real time and have tested it too. Hmmm...are you doing a region 1 NTSC DVD? If so, I would suggest you to try it again and if you have the same problem again, please post in this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&postid=374146#post374146).

it does seem as though im not the only one having this problem....
the thread you directed me to also has a user (ccsint - last post) that appears to have the same problem as i do. As i live in canada, im assuming that it is an R1 dvd. However, I will give it another shot, and hopefully it will work out :)

Hey 2Cool thanks for all of your guides. They are so helpful. I am currently working on a movie which has about 40 seconds of movie intros in the first PGC of the main movie. In this PGC is also the beginning of the movie. Since some of the beginning of the movie is contained in it, I do not want to delete the entire PGC, but only the beginning of it with the nonsense in it. If I preview the PGC in IFOEdit, I can change the entry point sector to bypass the intros at the beginning of the PGC. Is there any way to delete the beginning though or strip it out? Also since I have altered the playback time, must I also go in and adjust that value as well. I also have this situiation at the end credits where the end of the movie is located in the same PGC as the end credits, which I do not necessarily need to keep. Thanks.

Look into PgcEdit's "DVDShrink Remote Buttons" macro.
