DVDx 2.0 (mono sound possible?)

I've been using DVDx 2.0 to make divx5 dvdrips with pretty good results lately. I know people recommend Gordianknot but I simply can't figure it out and get lots of error messages. Anyway my question is if it is possible to make a mono mp3 with DVDx, I can't seem to figure it out anyway. It just seems stupid to make the mp3 in stereo if the dvd is mono. I've also tried to export the audio as wav and encode it separately but then the audio and video in my avi isn't in sync.
Any help would be much appreciated :-)

Hi-

I know nothing about DVDx, but as far as I know, BeSweet doesn't support mono audio (correct me if I'm wrong, DSPguru) and always converts it to stereo. But if you have a mono AC3 track, you can use HeadAC3he (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Audio/headac3he-0.23a.rar) to convert it to mono MP3.

I've used the LAME command "-m m" to create mono .mp3 before. I passed the command to BeSweet (thru Gknot) and, well, I hope it created mono .mp3.

Thanks for all the help, but I seem to have solved my problem another way. I converted my exported wav using Bladeenc insteed of Fraunhofer and the audio and video are now in sync. Must be some problem with the Fraunhofer codec?

I havn't encoded with DVDx for some time now but I am pretty sure that in the audio options you can encode in stereo, joint stereo and mono.

Which version do you have? I mine (version 2.0) you can only choose stereo or joint stereo.

Why no mono audio in BeSweet? Does it support mono input (ie mono ac3), but output as stereo? Would it be difficult to add? It's just that I'm about to back up all the eps of "The Prisoner", which only has a mono soundtrack (it's from 1969).

Exactly what does this mean? What happens when you encode a mono ac3 to stereo mp3 or ogg?

Is the sound divided between the channels or will the sound only come form one channel (right or left) :confused:

Well as far as I know nothing happens to the sound except it's a waste of megabites as you could encode a mono mp3 at 64kbs with the same theoretical quality as a stereo mp3 at 128kbs because their is only one channel. So if the movie is only in mono anyway you would be wasting space that could be used for the video. Anyway I hope this makes sence.

Exactly what does this mean?

I believe it takes the mono and converts it to stereo, giving you the exact same thing in both channels. And as ElQuapo says, you can cut the file size in half by getting true mono output.
