Hey, I'm trying to do an encode of Donnie Darko and it keeps giving me a weird. The majority of the image looks fine, but on the right side there will what looks like a < shape with static on the borders and green in the center like it looks like when there's encrypted data. It's damn weird because in all the previews and in Virtualdub itself, the image looks fine. I did a quick encode in DivX 5 just to test things and it looks okay. The specs on my rip are basically what the Doom9 guide says when optimizing for quality, I'm not doing any advanced stuff at all, just the same settings I've been using for a dozen or so other rips. Does anybody know what's going on?

Are the Hight and Width values you´re using a mutliple of 16?
The Effect you described could be caused by a resolution with both these values not being a multiple of 16.
Using Divx5 Hight and Width at least have to be multiples of 4, using XVID multiples of 16.

Then the encoding is OK, you're having trouble with the dshow-filter. How does it look decoded with ffdshow (latest version)?

it looks like it was the resolution, I didn't realize Xvid ran into glitches with that, I've done some non-standard resolutions before and it took them just fine, but they were all even and it's possible that they were multiples of 4. I'm not convinced it will only work with multiples of 16 though. I just ran a test of it at the standard 720x304 and it looked fine. Thanks for the help.

I don't seem to be running into any problems with resolutions that aren't divisible by 16 either; I'm using 1120x630 for HD encodes (I've encoded two movies with this so far, using Nic's 12/23/02 build), without any problems when using ffdshow for decoding. I get frames that freeze for a while if I check "use xvid". Also, I am using B frames, but not GMC or Q-pel.
Anyway:
1120 / 16 = 70 - width is fine
630 / 16 = 39.375 - height is not -- only divisble by 2.
So it may only have problems with widths that are not divisble by 16..
Just my 2 cents.
