I was just wondering if there was any possible way that when I rip a movie off the DVD could it hurt the DVD? I know it sounds silly but for some reason DVD's that I have ripped to my harddrive sometimes get skips and yet they don't have a single scratch on them.... Any ideas?

No.
Ripping a DVD to your hard drive is merely reading it, just like during playback, only much faster:)

this could happen!
actually the expression "to rip" sounds kind of brutal, but this is limited to the software aspect (:

as ToiletDuck said, this doesn't hurt it anymore than playing it.

still, it would be interesting to know which programs you use and what your system specs are. maybe there's some kind of conflict between your ripping program and your software dvd player (just a guess though )
