aspect ratio changes from 16:9 to 4:3 what should i do about cropping?

Hi, im trying to rip a PAL DVD and have just realised that the aspect ratio changes from 16:9 to 4:3 near the end of the movies, wierd i know but im unsure what the best way to crop is? cos if i crop to 16:9 i will gain quality on the first part, but lose half the picture at the end :(

Is there any way i can encode it as two seperate encodes then merge the two files together?

Or any solution really....

That does sound strange. Are you sure there isn't a second angle that can rip all 4:3 or all 16:9?

Its a low budget sport DVD, i think the whole DVD is encoded as 4:3 with borders at the beginning (when it is 16:9) but this still doesnt help me one bit :(

Hi-

It's impossible for the DAR to change within the movie. My guess is you mean that it goes from wide screen to full screen within a 4:3 DVD.

There is a way to do it and get the whole full screen picture by shrinking it. Say that the full screen part is from frames 90000 to 100000 and you have widescreen before and after, something like this might work:

Trim1=Trim(0,89999).Crop(xx,xx,xx,xx).LanczosResize(640,272)#crop black bars for the widescreen part
Trim2=Trim(90000,100000).Crop(xx,xx,xx,xx).LanczosResize(360,272).AddBorders(140,0,140,0)#crop for full screen
Trim3=Trim(100001,0).Crop(xx,xx,xx,xx).LanczosResize(640,272)#crop black bars for the widescreen part again
Trim1+Trim2+Trim3

Adjust for your crop figures, resolution, resizer, the AddBorders numbers you need to fill out the picture, etc. The AR may be slightly off for the full screen portion, but it may not be noticeable.
