encoding stops after 70megs

Hi All, I am using Gordian Knot to rip and encode a Korean movie called 'Volcano High' (Great movie BTW) :)

The problem I am having is that after about 70megs the encoder stops and I am left with the first few mins of the output avi. I was wondering if this would be related to the ripping process or whether I have screwed up some encoding settings? I am kinda new to this but have successfully backed up a few movies before, though this is the first time I have tried to use subtitles.

If anyone has any advice, I would appreciate it!

Also I was wondering if there is a database of settings people have used to successfully rip good quality movies? I think it would be good if we had encoding parameters for popular movies (how many time have people asked what settings were used to encode Star Wars Ep1??! ;)

How are you encoding this? Are you using GordianKnot? Are you setting up your own .avs file and using VirtualDub to encode? Let us know this and we can help you out a bit more.

If people use the search function, there would only be a few posts about each movie. ;) To be honest, I just don't think anyone wants to take the time to compile the information, with so many movies and such. Also, there are so many video codecs, audio codecs, file size preference, resolution preferences, etc etc etc, it's almost pointless.

Video processing also extends beyond ripping DVDs. I started with DVDs, but soon found myself into the DV (digital video ~~> camcorder) world. From what I learned ripping DVDs, I translated that information for use in DV processing. Information you learn about video processing can be used in any aspect, so it is best to learn what the programs do, the filters do, and how to achieve optimal quality in any situation. If you simply follow the written guides, you can get good rips. If you take the time to learn what you're doing, it's effect, and everything else, you'll be making amazing rips alongside the people who wrote the guides that got you started (not in a few weeks mind you, it will take time).

Anyways, post back with the programs/settings you're using for your problem, and we'll try to help you out some more.

overacid: he's using Gknot, you must have missed that.

First step: see if the AviSynth script that GKnot creates is working properly.

In the "Save & Encode" pop-up window, press the Preview button. This will open the script in Windows Media Player. It will show you what the input video to the encoder will look like. It probably won't run at full speed. Use the slider, and see if you can see not only the beginning of the content, but the end.

Second step: If the .avs script appears to be normal, copy and paste the text from your _Gknot.log file here for further study.

ah wouldn't you know it - accidentally deleted the VOBs from my HD when I was hacking the fat off to make some room. I will re-re-rip the movie tonight and give it another go then post the log file here. Thanks for waiting!

Don't know if it'll help, but you could try reinstalling DivX 5.

selected deinterlace (not the fast setting) and it worked. Am gonna try and encode tonight - will post here tomorrow.

Oh, you're using Gordian Knot 0.26 (which I could have seen from the log, but I didn't look that closely)... There is a bug in this when you use Fast Deinterlace.

I suggest that you update it to 0.27 where fast deinterlace (VerticalReduceby2) have been replaced by a better deinterlacer (though I'd suggest using Field Deinterlace anyway).

There could be a number of reasons, such as DivX 5 not installed properly, AviSynth script errors, even hardware. Deleting .vob files prematurely can do this, too.

I notice that your framerate is 29.97. To me, this means that your source is NTSC, with Field Operation in DVD2AVI set to None. If you are doing IVTC in your .avs script and you are encoding end credits separately, you must check the box labelled "IVTC in avs -> correct Frame Count" in the DivX 5 tab of the encoder pop-up window. Your end-credits will start at the wrong location unless you check the box.

As I asked earlier, please open your .avs script (D:\Rips\Volcano\Volcano_DVD2AVI.avs) in an .avi player and see if it plays at both the beginning, and near the end.

If you did not IVTC, the framerate of the main content (without end credits) will remain 29.97 and the length will be 1:37:17. It should end near frame 174933.

If you use IVTC, the framerate will be 23.976, the length should be the same (1:37:17), and it should end near frame 133948. This difference is why the "correct Frame Count" box needs to be checked when doing IVTC in the .avs script.

If the .avs doesn't open, the problem is in the script (or in AviSynth itself). If it opens, plays the beginning, but ends too soon, then you may have deleted .vob files. If it fails to open, it is likely a script error.

If the .avs looks correct to you, then the problem is likely to be the codec. You are using Gknot 0.26.0, which has a known procedural problem during install: If you install DivX 5, then do a complete install of Gknot 0.26.1 or earlier, you will overlay DivX 5 files with DivX 4 files. Re-install DivX 5 if that is the case.

There are other possibilities, of course....the last person to have this sort of problem was overclocking, and the heat destabilized his computer. Search on "counted frames differs" and you'll see a number of possiblities.
