Gordian Knot says check this if you want to watch your video on a TV. Uncheck for monitor usage.

Well, I don't quite get that. How would you watch a DivX movie on a TV anyway? I always watch mine on a monitor (sure it doubles as a TV, but it is still connected to a PC).

Can anyone give me an example of how you would watch a DivX movie on a TV?

Here is where I wonder if that checkbox means anything for me---
If I watch my DivX movie full screen on a monitor, so it somewhat simulates a TV, would the aspect ratio be correct with BT.601 checked or unchecked.

All this is in reference to a NTSC 4:3 rip of a movie (720x480). I'd prefer to take it to 512x384, but my above questions apply first.

Hi-

...an example of how you would watch a DivX movie on a TV?

That's easy. One way is to have a computer near the TV. The computer has a video or other card with video-out on it. You connect it to the TV and watch your DivX movies. I do it that way most of the time. Or you can have a laptop with vid-out. Or you can use one of those new DVD-MPEG4 players that are starting to show up.

...would the aspect ratio be correct with BT.601 checked or unchecked

Unchecked. For more information, please see TheWEF's long explanation in This Thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41740).

could you please quote where it says that, because i didn't check the readme for quite a while and because it's wrong.

i recommend to ALWAYS leave it checked (time to remove the stupid box...)!

Unchecked.

no, no - checked, always checked! - THEORETHICALLY, because practically it only depends on HOW YOU CONFIGURE YOUR TV-OUT (e.g. with TV-Tool) AND your TV - did you ever calibrate your system? - no.

if you uncheck ITU, AR is definitely not correct.

I watch my videos with WinDVD/PowerDVD. Sometimes in a window, sometimes full screen. I do watch them on my "TV" per se, but it has a VGA input and it runs at the regular computer resolution of 800x600x60Hz. For arguement sake, its a monitor. My HTPC connects via VGA for DVD and DivX use.

I wouldn't dream of using TV-out (s-video, composite) and the like. I do have a Matrox G400 and nVidia GeForce4 with TVTool. I've played with both on a regular interlaced TV and didn't like the quality on either. Anyway, I digress.

So my question remains. If I watch a given 4:3 DivX movie in a window, I would want it unchecked to get a correct AR with 512x384? But what if I maximize and fullscreen the video (still on a monitor). Would it still be correct AR in that sense?

I'm trying to make sure I do the DivX movies in the most futureproof sense. I have a feeling interlaced TV sets won't be around and more display devices will be similar to progressive computer monitors. Yes, no?

Thanks,
Robert
