8mm, VHS, miniDV

DaveQB: I'm open for projects ATM where i can transfer miniDV of weddings and the like to DVD. I've done one so far: 92 min of 6Mbit video with subtitling and 420 pictures as 4 stillshows as well and 200 MB is still empty. I was really amazed by the storage capacity. I'm not thrilled about capturing general tv-stuff (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=37125&highlight=minidv+capturing) through composite though, but i did some Dexter's Lab cartoons (145 min 4Mbit auto-CQ and complete noise reduction in TMPG), now THIS looks incredibly good!

I would desperately like to hear about what you're doing with the 8mm to get a good transfer? This (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=36759&highlight=minidv+capturing) ??

no worries, i spotted the "8mm" in the post

well that link i dunno, the tapes i use are 8mm tapes that my Samsung CamCorder uses (bout 5years old) same tapes Digital8 uses i hear.

i have no idea bout minDV though, never used it so dont ask me bout that :)

so that leads me to your question, not sure what you mean all there cept the "I would desperately like to hear about what you're doing with the 8mm to get a good transfer? This ?? " part.

well i have hooked it up two ways, both the same in quality (maybe not, got a higher quality card now, so maybe i can pick up a diff)

i plug my RCA cables from my Samsung (Stereo Audio) to my VCR, then hook up the RCA cables to my Capture card.
(i plug the TV antenna into the capture card and my pay TV into my VCR (and then my Capture Card and change channels on the VCR between Pay-TV and CamCorder, Antenna TV channels are set through te TV Tuner on the Cap Card)

i have read that the VCR helps iron out interference, not sure how true that is and now i got a 10-bit Cap Card and got full PAL res working i might try plugging directly into the Cap Card from CamCorder

Oh well, i thought you were talking about celluloid 8mm. A friend has a stack of those, that's why i asked.
If you want to transfer your tapes to dvd i think s-video stinks, composite is better, but the firewire i used (Canon XM12 or something) gave a really crispy result. Don't know how you should get it into the Samsung though.

PLEASE don't use your antenna for capturing: use one half of an audio-cable and connect the composite tulip (yellow) to the composite of the capture-card. Select 'composite' as source and you'll be alright. No tuning man! 8-) If your VCR has no composite but a scart, then get a $5,- plug for the scart with has red+white+yellow+svideo connectors and set it to 'out' and use the yellow plug again.
