general q's avi to svcd using dvd2svcd

Hi - I have recemtly started using dvd2svcd to backup my dvd's and avi's, but i need to understand what i am doing and why i am doing it...

I have been backing up my dvd's using dvd2svcd and usually get quality returns on 2 cd's - no problem, and i think dvd2svcd takes the "pain" out of backing up a dvd, i usually use cce to decode.....:)

What I need to understand is the avi to svcd part, here goes..:p

If you convert from vob files to avi - you lose some video and audio, due to compression? and I thought that once that quality was gone there was no way of getting it Back.

If i convert avi(say 700Mb) using dvd2svcd as above i get two disks, and no quality improvement?(am I just wasting disks)If i use cce as standalone to decode avi to mpg. i get a reduction in time and a file that fits on 1 disk - i then use nero to burn svcd on one disk.

any info on this dilema would be most useful... :cool:

Hi and welcome to the forums.

I've reencoded a number of .avis to SVCD. Personally, I think the major quality degradation comes from lowering the horizontal resolution to the 480 that SVCD requires (assuming you're starting with a high enough .avi resolution and quality to begin with), rather than from the reencoding process itself. These are meant for playback from a DVD player to a TV set anyway. In most cases you should use 2 CDs, but I don't think the quality will be much worse, and probably not even noticeably worse, when compared to making an SVCD from the original DVD. The only way to be sure though will be to try it for yourself.

thanx for reply - its a bit more clearer now - i reckon i will continue doing svcd's through dvd2svcd (seems to work for me)
