I am currently in the process of building a backend for doom9 (I hope it will be good enough to be used).
The first pre-alpha version will soon be availlable however I will need all help on the followings:
-Hosting: Doom9 kindly offered to host it if I don't use up to much bandwidth. But we all now he doesn't have enough time nor bandwith to do so I would rathher have someone lift the weight ofhis shoulders.Mind you I'm asking to host the project not the actual curent backend of this site.I need PHP4 & Mysql. No downgraded version of php (for exemple no mail() function as in free hosting)
-Testing: When it will be on line constructive feedback is always apreciated (Wether it is good or bad).
-Graphical designing: For the project and the site hosting it. The graphical chart for the backend must stay as light as possible will creating a custom look.
I reserve myself the right to turn down any graphical chart without justifying myself.

-Find a good name for the app...

Right now I don't need a hand for the coding (Just bug reports and sugestion as for what to improve). I might latter on.
THX all of you for your time.

Here it is,first release candidate. Please give me feed back.
Just unzip , edit global_var.inc.php ans run install.php your site should be up and running:

Hi,

great idea!

With this new backend that you plan, would it be easier to have a common base for all doom9 translation mirrors? I mean downloads and document management could be unified for all projects. Or is this backend "just" meant for Doom9? (just wanted to ask because that would change a lot for the other projects if this new backend becomes reality)

The backend would enable you to have multiuser restriction,. You can restrict a user to a given number of files or folders that they can modify (and that without having any special priviledge on the server other than running php and mysql). The first alpha is just about ready to be released but currently (since yesterday) my computer is down I have no $$$ to fix it. I might have to move down to a k6-2 300mhz!!!
I will keep you all informed and post the first alpha here as soon as my computer gets running.

Oh I got your post wrong. You could install the bakend on your existing server easily provided you have PHP and Mysql but I can't say wether DOOM9 will host your sites. You'v got to ask him not me.

well, I have a php+mysql hosting on www.doom9.de - that's not the problem. my question is... will it be possible to keep a common database with document versions.

example:

"guide-name" engl. rev.: 2002-06-01 | German: 2002-07-06 | Spanish ... etc.

well, this is a simple example, but it would make things easier if a solid document management would replace our daily manual work.

@Scipio.
Nope, Although that's a suggestion for futur versions I might consider implementing it as soon as the current is debuged and running. My computer is starting to work again so I will post it here in a day or 2
