AVI audio and synch issues

Hello, I'm attempting to convert the recent posting of Harry Potter
2 (the DVD screener) and I've encountered an odd problem.
The first part runs for 1.11.30 according to media player, and the
AVI plays just fine. (it has mp3 VBR according to vDub)
If I extract the audio using virtualdub and convert to uncompressed
wav using either lame 392 or winamp, the resulting audio file is
only 1.11.12 long.
When the AVI is played, the audio runs to the end.
Using this wav in tmpgenc results in a mpg where the sound is further
ahead of the image and gets worse as you progress thru the movie.

Using Sound Forge, I used the resample function to set the rate
to 47788 instead of 48000. I didn't actually resample the data,
just modified it to play at this rate. This slow the file down very
slightly and is now in synch in Tmpgenc.

Why is the problem occurring, and is there a better solution?

update:
even the trick with the sample rate didn't work properly.
I also tried stretching the sound but no good.
However, using the original AVI for the sound source as is
results in an in-synch mpg, but the sound is a little scratchy.
Better than nothing.
I've never experienced this problem before. All other AVI's,
including those with the similar VBR mp3 sound have worked fine
using virtualdub to spin off the sound, expand to an uncompressed wav
and use it in tmpgenc.
What's different about this one?

Try using the vdub mod package. I had some synch issues with disc 2 of Chamber of Secrets and after opening the file with vdubmod with nandub vbr audio compatibility checked, and then just saving as avi (direct stream on both audio and video)I got a new avi file with no synch issues.

I didn't know about this. Frankly, I spent so long farting around
with it, I hardly want to watch the movie anymore!

It's interesting, my cd1 was the problem, cd 2 was perfect.

which version of VirtualDubMod are you using?

I can't find the NanDub option to check...

That's a point I can't find it either.
I just downloaded the latest bug fix (dated Jan 17 2003).

The problem I am having is when I attempt to make the MPG in tmpgenc.
I'm using the AVI, and a WAV file for the sound.
I created the WAV file by using virtualdub to spin off the vbr mp3,
and then used Lame 392 to create the uncompressed Wav.
The audio gets more out of synch the further into the mpg you go.
By the end, it's about 10 seconds off.

If I just watch the AVI or use the avi for audio source as-is,
these operations work fine (except the sound quality in the mpg is poor)

Hi, there.
I had the same problem with Harry Potter, until I tried this one:
Virt. Dub. Video=direct stream copy. Audio=direct stream copy. Save wav. Rename the wav-file in the command promt xxxxx.wav to xxxxx.mp3.
Use Headac3he to convert the mp3-file to wav and use the wav file to merge with the avi-video when converting to VCD/SVCD. Worked for me.

Thanks for the info, I've moved onto other stuff now,
but what is Headac3he? Is it a ac3 > wav conversion tool?
There are so many tools, it's tough to keep up with them -

Thanks for the info - what other options are there re: the handling of
AC3 files? I downloaded ac3codec.rar from the net, and it contains
two files, mpgaudio.ax and iviaudio.ax.
Once these are registered, I'm able to play ac3 AVI files in media
player. Presumably, I can now access the audio in tmpgenc
directly? - not sure yet, still playing with it.

As far as I can see/read about it, until now there is no way to access AC3 directly in TMPGEng. If you found it, I´ll very much like to know.
