hi,

well, in many discussion with many ppl I spoke about the Comp. Check.
For some guys it's absolute neccesary other ppl never used it cause they think it has no use!

What do u think?

I'm somewhere between. I use it for every movie I make, but I could definitely live without it... If i have to chose I'll go for nonsense (but it's a close one)

I think it's absolutely necessary.

It's the most important part of the encoding in my opinion, all the settings goes around it.

if you think it's a good idea to use the same settings, filters, resolution for another movie that might compress up to 5 times better or 5 times worse - go for nonsense.

It determines all my settings also, i.e., what filters to use, what size to resize to as well as resize method, whether to try for 1cd or do 2cds. I often start with Gknot for my first guestimate test then use Jonny's DivX5Enc to fine-tune for a good compressibility with various avs using different sizes or filters. Without it I would be at a loss to determine these things.

I think it's only important if filesize matters,
as far as I know file size don't grow that much
above 80% using DivX

Well, you don't necesarilly need to use a comp. test to determine appropiate filters, resolution, etc...

As long as you have some experience with general video encoding, know the length of the movie and know the content (dark/light scenes, fast/low motion, etc...) you can usually make a good guess. (But of course you already know this...) And to be honest, I could never tell the difference between say 576H at ~60% and 640H at ~75% (I usually don't wear my glasses in front of the computer screen, that alone makes a bigger difference. At times I actually find myself doing comparions with AVSCompare without them, which isn't a very good idea as you may imagine... :) ).

It's a rare occasion that I find myself doing a drastic change after making a comp. test (though I guess it does happen (when I did Clerks a few weeks ago for instance which turned out to be extremely hard to compress)).

I'm not saying it's nonsence, but it's not a blessing either. It's one of many other tools in my toolbox.

Now Gordian Knot in itself, that's a blessing :)

Then I think in the spirit of the poster's intent, you should vote for 'blessing,' if you haven't already.
