my computer can read SVCDs w/ chapter entry points BUT not the ones made w/ DVD2SVCD

Hello,
I am new to this forum. I have read the FAQ and would like to make it clear that my intentions are not to annoy anyone with a question that might have been answered 100 times before!

I run windows XP, I have the latest APSI drivers, and use powerDVD 2.55 & XP 4.0. I have an Athlon XP 2000+ and 256 MB of RAM.


The problem with the SVCDs I have made using DVD2SVCD ver 1.1.0 Build 1 is that SVCDs with chapter entry points won't playback at all on my computer. I am not refering to being able to jump to the next/previous chapter as I understand this feature might not work with certain software, but about being able to play the movie itself on my computer.

What's interesting, is that I can't even open the .mpeg file directly from the CD, Windows gives me some weird error message. This kind of SVCD's with chapter entry points are basically unplayable on my computer, though they work fine in my standalone DVD player.

I have several old SVCDs with chapter entry points that work fine in my computer as well as on my apex 1200 standalone DVD player.

Given the fact that I have other SVCD's that work perfectly on my computer (as well as on my standalone DVD player) I am inclined to believe that this problem is with the program used by DVD2SVCD to make the final files rather than with my computer.

I also want to point out that I have the same playback issue if I add the chapters manually using VCDEasy, which also uses VCDXBuild.


-Is there a way to fix this problem?

-Am I doing something incorrectly?

-Is there any alternative program that will let me add chapter entry points? (I tried to download TSCV but the links on the website are dead)

if your dvd player can play them back ok, i don't think there is any problem with the way it's being encoded...i know the latest version of power dvd is 4 which is compattible with windows XP..you might try upgrading to that. but if they work on your dvd player then the end result should be ok right? :)

2. Do you burn them using the latest version of VCDeasy
3. Have you checked that your old CDs STILL work fine on your PC?
4. If convenient, install just the DVD and your OS and try if it is a driver issue.

Well this has happened so many times I thought it was more of a general question, not an individual incident. Unfortunately I don't have any in my computer right now.

Yes I have, otherwise I wouldn't have jumped to conclusions.

Well what happens is that the problem appear to be with the programs I have used. I could just make a simple SVCD with Nero and I wouldn't have any playback issue.

5. What about other DVD Players
I only have 1 in my PC and a standalone DVD player.


You know guys, my intentions are not whine about the free pie! :), I just believe there is something mysterious going on here that I am not aware of.

I am looking for some methods to get around the problem, or maybe even a different program.

As already mentioned before I also think that it is a software problem. Try power dvd 4.0. There is a 30-day trial version available on the homepage.

Power DVD 4.0 won't read them. I happened to have that program already.

Any other suggestions?
To what program would you attribute the fact that Windows XP itself can't open or copy the .mpeg files in the CD's?

If I try to copy the .mpeg file to the hard drive it will say:

Cannot Copy AVSEQ01: Invalid MS DOS function.

No problem doing all this with the old SVCD's though

Who says XP can't open the mpeg files? I do it all the time. I open them in XP, ME, 98SE, and on both DVD and CDROM drives. I do it especially often at a friend's house who doesn't have a DVD player. It works every time.

Well they dont' work on my computer or in my laptop. I even considered that the SVCD's had been maliciously copy protected by the program used to make the chapter entry points.

The SVCD's themselves will work fine. The ones that won't work are the ones with Chapter Entry Points.

In the 'CD Image Tab' I have VCDXBuild checked, Include XML on CD, and DVD Chapters, PBC Type: PBC use selections.

The size of the mpeg files is usually 794.


Is there any setting I might have incorrect?

PS: I can't open them with win98 either.

Error Code 89020003

The DVD disc might have been damaged so as to inhibit playback operation.

That's what PowerDVD XP 4.0 says when I try to play the SVCD's. Sometimes the program will just crash. Again, my old SVCD's with chapter entry points work fine.

Try burning the SVCD bin/cue files as described in the Q&A, and also try using only a max 4x when burning.

Holy Cow DVD2SVCD, it worked!

I didn't burn at 4x before because it never passed through my head that the mere fact of having Chapter Entry Points required burning at a lower speed.

It sounds to me like your cd burner is wearing out or possibly bad media.

it could be alot of things, but if he has extra cash laying around i'd recommend a lite-on burner for the price and quality. I have 2 burners both of them i burn movies at max speed without problems and i use different cheap cdr's still no problem. One thing he could try is flashing his burner with the latest rom if he has that option.

I second chainsaw's thoughts. My lite-on has _never_ given me trouble, of any kind. Burn at full speed on cheap bulk media, and no sweat. Great speed, and a great price. Can't beat them :)
