Reasons why pulldown.exe wont work...

Sorry about all the questions I've been having about pulldown.exe lately, but the only way I can get it to work is by using something like DoItFastForU...I'd rather be doing the ripping/encoding/authoring the way the guides at Doom9 have it all layed out and get comfortable with those methods before I start experimenting with other tools.

My question is what would be some things that would cause pulldown to NOT work properly? Could there be something in the earlier stages of the encoding process (with like ChaptorXtractor, DVD2AVI, or even CCE) that would cause the *.mpv file to not be composed the way it should be and cause pulldown.exe to not read it? One thing I noticed today is that while using ChaptorXtractor on an NTSC movie, I have overlooked the part where it calls to change the framrate to 23.976 FPS. Another thing that I forgot to do is run proxyoff.reg. Both of these steps are in the guide "How to get the best out of CCE" but I simply made the mistake of going too fast and not slowing down to read everything. As far as I know though, those are the only 2 things that I've missed in the guides and they are the only 2 things that I can think of that would cause pulldown.exe to not work, but then again, I'm too new to know whether or not I'm right or wrong here.

Well, you are not telling us what "NOT working properly" actually means. All PULLDOWN.EXE does, is add the "repeat field" and "framerate" flags in your *.M2V file - ie, where the flag was "0" before PD, it will be "1" now, or for framerate, where it was "10" it is now "11". This means that the SIZE of the *.M2V file will NOT change - at all. But, since PD actually DUPLICATES your old file with it's newly created PULLDOWNED version, you must have the space availabe for the new file. If your original file was 4.0GB long, then you will need exactly 4.0GB additional space. If there isn't enough SPACE where you want to send your PD'ed file, it will fail.

However, if PD CANNOT find the header that it NEEDS TO MODIFY, then it will also fail (why continue on a file that has no hope of ever working). This means that somewhere in your process, you skipped or performed a step incorrectly.

Guides are sometimes a blessing, but only if you really understand what they are actually telling you. Just like there are "guides" to driving an Indy 500 race car, an Indy 500 car is NOT something that you want to learn to drive on. You should probably learn to walk before you attempt to run (RE: try simpler projects).

just use eye's program to run it..no need to download pulldown anymore..its a great prog and doesnt stray from anything really just a mere way to save time by doing all the steps in one shot without u having to sit there and wait till each is finished..

followed guides and succesfully used pulldown to move one movie from 23 to 29fps. Strugled on the last one though. First it was originally a 3gb file but finished as a 2gb after pulldown. now when i tried again it is a 0gb file. banging my head against a wall.

I believe that the program being refered to is DoItFast4U! Downloadable of course from Doom9 download section. The program is very simple and easy to use & i recomend it.Hope this helps.

thanks for that ill give it a try. found the problem though. I can rip dvds, use cce fluently, ifoedit, pulldown, use maestro confidently and have sucessfully competed hundreds of dvds. What i cant do is check my bloody space on my hard drive. what a thicko.
