Welp, I have finally done it. I have synched the subtitles to an IVTC'ed rip of the Japanese R2 DVD. The resulting encoded DVD is actually better than the poorly transfered R2 DVD. Gone are most of the interlacing artifacts. There are still some hints of it here and there, moving lips and scrolling credits, but for the most part, it is much better than the source. But most importantly, the video is anamorphic and the subtitles are synched. I can now watch what has to be the greatest anime movie of the 80's from the comfort of my couch :).

The AVS script was simple. Anyone who has this DVD knows that the video is window-boxed. I did not crop and resize the video. All I did was performed IVTC on the video. My Telecide script is below:

Telecide(Guide=1,Gthresh=75,Threshold=30,Chroma=true)
Decimate(cycle=5)

But the subtitling, now that was a bit of a pain. But I finally got it to synch perfectly. I borrowed the subtitle script from the DVD Subber ZDS file. Tweaked the timing in Substation Alpha. Then authored it in DVD Maestro. And whollah! I watched this last night on my Dobly Pro Logic 2 surround setup and I must say that this flick has the most impressive Dolby Surround track I have heard in a long while.

I can up a small DIVX sample if someone has some webspace.

I have the same problem with this exact same DVD... and got banned from Neuron2's forum for asking too many questions. I ended up settling on encoding the video as straight interlaced, as doing that masked the artifacts pretty well. They're still there, of course, but they don't show up at all during viewing.

I was shocked at how poor the transfer was on this movie, but I recently saw that the new release of Mazinkaizer from ADV suffers the same weird interlacing artifacts. I'll definitely check out your decomb settings though and see how it looks. Nice to see someone else interested in this particular disc. ^_^

I'm actually working on the subtitles now, correcting and filling in some holes while reworking the timing and flow of the script.

You misspelled my handle, so I took the liberty of correcting it. Of course I assume it wasn't an intentional insult, as that would attract sanctions.

Yeah, I just hate questions. That's why I have 2700+ posts here and also run a personal website and forum.

I'm well aware you can ban me, Donald. If it'll give you some kind of thrill to "impose sanctions", then feel free to do so. If I wish to post, I'll be more than happy to use another nick or proxy I've already set up to circumvent the "punishment" you dish out during one of your power trips.

Seriously, lose the thin skin and the attitude, dude. You're a far more useful mammal without them.

Anyways, back on topic. The settings that Niggenz gave a decent result, but it definitely some noticible artifacts and also jerkiness during some panning sequences.

I finally found success with this script:

Telecide(order=1,guide=1,post=1,hints=true)
Decimate(cycle=5,quality=3)
ConvertToYUY2()
SmoothDeinterlace(tff=true,lacethresh=0,edgethresh=0,staticthresh=0,blend=true)

I honestly couldn't see the blends at all when playing back normally, and the deinterlacing helped clean up alot of noise from the print. Nice smooth motion, no jerky panning sequences, and no noticible artifacts @24fps progressive video.

It did soften the picture up a little bit, but considering the source it ended up looking much better in my opinion.

I use SmoothDeinterlace because it most closely replicates the look that VDub's stock deinterlacing filter creates, which to me is pretty nice. I would like to be able to use TMPGenc's Deinterlacer (the Double(adaptation) option specifically), but serving that to AVIsynth via VFAPI is incredibly slow. I tried using KernelDeint once, and got alot of jaggies & whatnot so I prefer to use the other filter.

I do use filters like SmartSmoother and Warpsharp for anime on occaision, but only when I'm converting Divx rips to DVD.
