I'm bouncin' off the wall again...:D

I did this movie a while back but I had only a month of experience. I'm know better now. This is a really funny movie. I really wanted the uncensored menu "ON" all the time but I couldn't get it to work. So with motivation from others,you know who you are, I revisited Van Wilder Unrated R1 and did my magic.

It's hard to write a guide for all DVD movies and you know they aren't all the same. But I strongly believe in learning by examples. This is not just a cheat sheet, it's a "learning and understanding" cheat sheet.

1.

FULLSCREEN: Use Smartripper and rip all files except Vts_04_X.X.
WIDESCREEN: Use Smartripper and rip all files except Vts_05_X.X.

2. Use Ifoedit and open up VIDEO_TS.IFO.

3. Region Free just in case. If RCE is present, set your region and save IFO.

4. Get VTS Sectors.

5. Repeat step 3 for rest of other IFOs.

6. DVD play to preview.

7. ****IMPORTANT****:Before we dabble in the IFOs, it is important that we need to BACKUP all our IFOs and BUPs to another folder. In case something goes wrong. Trust me. What we need to do later, you don’t want to mess up. Besides, it’s a good habit. And also, I also jot down the original values before I change them so I can revert back to them if I erred out. Have a notepad nearby.

8. The first title played is Title 2 which is Artisan’s Company Logo and the second is Title 3 which is the DVD contents declaration.
Let’s bypass those suckers. Go to VIDEO_TS.IFO / VMGM_PGCI_UT / PGC-Menu_2. We need to hexedit Pre command 12 as follows so double-left click on line.

Translation: Bypass Title 2 & 3 and main menu play upon DVD insert.

Details: Jumping to titles is part of VMG’s job. Our instructions are always in VIDEO_TS.IFO / VMGM_PGCI_UT’s PGC-Menus. It was easy going through all 14 PGC-Menus looking for a traces of Title 2 and found it in PGC-Menu 2. Title 1 contains your menus so I performed the edit above.

11. This was my first DVD in which I didn’t have the movie menus in the same titleset. So I found it in Title 1.

In VTS_01_0.IFO, I viewed the VOBs in VTS overview/Language Menu Unit section and documented the important stuff for you and me.

12. Here’s where the hard work comes in. What I found out was when I was previewing the movie and watching the Gpregs, I noticed only GPreg 11 would have the value of “1” whenever I chose uncensored version. I also tooked in mind that Menu 8 was our censored version and Menu 9 was our uncensored version. So I went through every PGC-Menu in VTS_01_0.IFO / VTSM_PGCI_UT.

If I saw any command containing “If GPreg<11> == (cmp-val)<0>”, I hexedited that according to a nearby “If GPreg<11> == (cmp-val)<1>” command.
If I saw any Menu 8s in any command, I changed those to Menu 9s.

Pre-Translation: To view the you-know-what. The DVD will play uncensored (XXX) entirely,even if you chose the censored version.

Hexedit carefully because if you miss one, you won’t get to see the show. Go to VTS_01_0.IFO / VTSM_PGCI_UT and start editing. Oh if you don’t know how to be in hexedit mode, just double-left click the command line. The hexedit window will pop up.

UPDATE: Step 13 and 14 has been edited. Bypassing the aspect ratio screen has been updated. There is a fix now.

13. In VTS_01_IFO/VTSM_PGCI_UT/PGC-Menu_15,

Translation: When you press Play, you go straight to movie.

If you want to get rid of those pesky company logos and intros before the movie really starts then perform the following edit in Vts_05_0.ifo/VTS_PGCITI/VTS_PGC_1/Cell playback section.


Cell Playback:

OLD Cell_1: entry point sector 0 [00002554]
NEW Cell_1: entry point sector 9556 [00002554]

Translation: So when the movie begins to play, you bypass all the unneeded intros and the movie starts where it suppose to.

Did you know there is a hidden show (easter egg) on the main menu of disk 1? Well, I wouldn't say it's hidden but the way to navigate to there is sort of illogical. For those who knew, you've been spending too much time on the DVD, like me. :D

Navigate the star cursor over "SCENES" button and press your "UP" arrow button. Logically, it should wrap-around up and then highlight a button at the bottom of the screen but it jumps to the Van Wilder Logo on middle of her shirt. If you pressed "DOWN" from SCENES, your cursor will go to "PLAY" button.

When you see a smaller star on her shirt,press enter and enjoy! Me Likey!:D :D

How did you know when to edit the commands in a certain way:

I tried to do this on my own w/o reading the hex edits you gave and just the advice. When I cam to this pgc menu I edited the hex value to:

So how did you know to leave the cmp-val @ 0 and change the 1d to 1f. I can see that you made this pre command basicaly like another one right below it.

Your solution for skipping "those pesky company logos and intros before the movie really starts" doesnt work for me. The DVD freezes right before the movie should start. Are you sure this is the correct way to do this?

I know you said you couldnt figure this out before but Im sure it can be done. Can you help me try to figure out how to skip the widescreen/fullscreen selection screen altogether. Whatever funtion is associated with going to that selection screen just needs to be changed to go straight to the movie.

Question 4
First, I think you got your direction a bit confused for fixing the widescreen/fullscreen selection menu (they are backwards). Also, if I have to keep the menu, is there a command line that would allow you to go straight to the movie if you select fullscreen (and have the widescreen version) right now it just loops back to play the whole menu again.


Again, thank you for all of your help 2cool, I think I am finally begining to learn some of the finer points of the ifofiles. Now I just wish Derrow would get back because I have soooo many suggestion.

First of all, we need to be working on the original VTS_01_0.IFO. Open IFO and DVD play. Click on IFOedit status panel and click on the square button on the far right with a dot in it. This shows your GP Register section. Click on title bar of video window to select as active window and click on "uncensored" menu button and watch Gpreg<11>'s value. Initially, you should be seeing a "1" as the original default was your censured menu. Click on "censured" menu button again and watch GPreg<11>'s value. Notice the toggling values?

So, as I stated in step 12 in my above cheat sheet. A value of "1" in GPreg<11> is present when you are playing CENSURED menu. A value of "0" is present when you are in your UN-CENSORED menu.

So as stated in my step 12 in my cheat sheet, where there is a GPreg<11> == (cmp-val)<0>, there's a nearby GPreg<11> == (cmp-val)<1> command which is pre-command #7.

We didn't need to edit the pre-command #7 as it plays our UNCENSORED menu as programmed. We just needed to edit pre-command #5 which contained our (cmp-val)<0>. So don't edit pre-command #7, just mirror what comes after the "then" part in the precommand #5 just like pre-command #7. That's where the bytes "1d" and "1f" come to play.

Do you get the picture now? That's as simple as I can get.

Question 2

I don't experience any freezes on my computer but your configuration is not the same configuration as mine(software and hardware). The only other way I can think of is to probably to cut the desired intro frames out but I wouldn't want to go through the whole trouble. Anyway, changing the entry point sector does work for me but with unpredictable added delay after burn. Maybe it's my burner...maybe it's my player.

Did it ever occur to that maybe I did that error on purpose so to stimulate your mind and understand the code?

Ok, Ive been going over the ifos like crazy. PGC menu 6 (VTS_01_0.ifo) seems to be the master for all the buttons. Menu 15 is our menu of interest (I think), and it links to PGC menu 65.

I know Im on the right track with menu 15 because I can break the play button with it and leave everything else intact. I tried changing the # of pre-commands to 1 and jumping to the title set but that didnt work.

I think this would work

Since you are in VTS_01_0.IFO, you can't do a jump from a titleset to title. You must jump from titleset>VMG>title.

Im a bit confused. I now understand that we cant jump to the title set, but I think Im still in the right place, just need the right set of commands.

So how do you go from the menus to the movie. Ive tried to follow them through to see where it links to the movie and how it does it but I can find it.

Not sure what the 30 is for

Next would be 02 for a plain (jump_tt), but 22, has the if/then

The last 09 is to set it to<9>

What command do I use to link to the movie since its in a different title set( aka how do I titleset>VMG>title)?

Tried to use your guide which seems to be geared towards Widescreen but identifies VTS04 vobs as the Widescreen movie. When I played the movie with IFOEdit, selecting Widescreen connected me with VTS05 vobs. Proceeding at a fat, dumb and happy pace, I followed your instructions with expected results through step 10. Between step 11 and 13, some edit must point to VTS04. However, I kept VTS05 since IFOEdit said it was the Widescreen. Therefore, I received a "DVD navigational error" message when it tried to go directly to the movie. I assume that was because it couldn't find the VTS04 files (they weren't there). Did I miss something or was IFOEdit lying to me about the Widescreen version? I did look at the VTS05 IFO and only the menu portion said 4:3 while the movie portion said 16:9. Did the step 13 edit cause the DVD to look for the VTS04 files?

I can't look at it right now since I'm at work and it's been a while I did Van Wilder. I'm confident that the VTS_04 is the widescreen movie. Now, keep in mind that I did a Special edition Unrated version and I only do NTSC cheat sheets. If you are doing PAL, it's a common case that both DVDs may be authored differently.

By the way, my old nick was bweeston. I asked Doom9 to change it to old-hack which I use in almost all other DVD forums I visit.

I know the guide can get very technical but I tried to leave in as much information for people to hopefully understand.

Step 11: Basically, this gives a description of your menus. In this unrated version, there were two menus to choose from, Censored or uncensored. I just wanted to decribe which one was what.

Step 12: Certain menu commands are edited so that our "uncensored" version will play from DVD insert to movie play. Who wants the boring censored version anyway?

Step 13: The DVD is navigated to a different exit scene and the movie starts playing immediately afterwards.

In my older guides, I try to provide plain simple language of describing my actions. Either in the beginning of the step or in "Details" or "Translation" notes. I think you were overwelmed by the wordy guide.

Aspect ratio menu is bypassed so instead of Menu 15 playing, Menu 21 plays with her shirt off. Notice that the edit is Pre Command #1 in Menu 15? No commands in Menu 15 will be executed except this since we made a jump, therefore no clip play.

Im curious, is the program menuedit in anyway powerful enough to do to a menu what was done in this thread. If so, Ill have to buy it!

Well, it is a year later, and I am new to all this, but I had the same problem as you, gnutellafan.

I solved it by setting CPreg<5> to 2 before linking to PGC21. Through trial and error I managed this by the following changes in PGC-Menu 15 (adding one command before 2cool's change):

Of all the complex authored DVD I've work, this has got to be one that still got me stressed out. The menus are split into censored and uncensored cells and there are 4 aspect ratios existing. All GPRMs used and lots of SPRMs used to set those. Also, there are unique cells playing after you select a chapter initially for both censored and uncensored. I give credit to the people responsible for this great authoring.

Well anyway, I tried the additional command like XePyR posted and I didn't get it to work. :(

just my 2 cents: It would help tremendously if we could retrace, step by step, what the DVD virtual engine does, from First play on, including watching registers and all. This is what r0lZ (who wrote PgcEdit) refers to as his "trace" function in this (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=82724&highlight=bypass+menu) thread. Then you could add the appropriate commands in the right place to replicate exactly the state you're in when you are at your "target" location. You might even be able to do that in the first play PGC, and jump straight where you'd like to be, right?

mmm, I'm puzzled. Don't you think it's true that the state of the DVD player is completely represented by where you are in the PGC, and the set of registers? In other words, if I put a DVD in a player, follow a few menus make a few button clicks and find myself say, at the main menu, I would imagine that the state of the virtual engine at this point is completely represented by the set of registers, and the currently playing PGC. What else could there be?
If that's the case, then in theory you could make it so the first play PGC sets the registers as above, and jumps to the same PGC you were at (main menu), and you should find yourself in exactly the same situation as above.

I'll experiment with that idea tonight (using Mark's tray DVD player, which lets you see the registers in real time) and post my results. If that was true, then you could completely customize your backed-up DVD to start exactly the way you like it (say, with spanish subtitles, widescreen, 5.1 audio etc etc etc), in just one shot. That would be rather cool!
Also, the user would have to put some effort to study up on commands to understand the big picture better.
Well, what if you could dump all the registers when you're where you'd like to go automatically (main title?) and a PgcEdit macro that would put the appropriate set commands in the first-play PGC and jump to the right place? The user wouldn't have to know anything about commands right? The hitch might be to jump to the desired place without modifying the registers previously set (the precommands of where you're jumping might screw things up, I realize).

OK here's what I found.

I was trying to see if you could do the following in order to bypass all unwanted material and menus and go straight to the main menu (or anywhere else you'd like to go):
- Using Mark's Tray DVD, open the DVD, and navigate to the main menu clicking on the desired buttons if necessary (for example selecting the desired aspect ratio). Then pause playback, read all the registers and write them down.
- Then go to PgcEdit, and replace the first play Pgc by a series of SETGPRM (to set the registers as you wrote them down), and then jump straight to the title menu.

This almost works! The hitch is that as I feared in my previous post, the main title precommands have already been executed when you pause playback in Mark's Tray DVD and therefore, you're reading register values as they are *after* the precommands, not before (which is what we need instead). If the precommands modifies them (which they do in all 3 DVDs I tried), then it looks like we're hosed!
BUT, you can still do it but you have to do a trick:

- Go in PgcEdit and put a break EDIT: Make that an "exit" see my second post below as the first of your precommands in the main menu. This will prevent all precommands from executing, just what we need! Save and open the DVD in Mark's Tray DVD.
- Go to the main menu as above, pause playback and write down the register values. This time, they're "correct".
- Go back to PgcEdit, and replace the first play Pgc by a series of SETGPRM (to set the registers as you wrote them down, I only set the non-zero ones, I'm not sure whether that's safe, probably not), and then put a jump command to the title menu (JumpSS-VTSM command).
- Remove the break command that you inserted at the top of the main menu's precommands. EDIT: make sure you *remove* it, don't replace it by a nop, the goto instructions below might get screwed up Save and you're done!

Amazingly, this works!!!! As soon as you open your DVD file (in PowerDVD for example), you jump straight to the main title, and everything looks OK (at least for the 3 DVDs I tried). You can access everything as you would normally, play the movie etc.

Now there's one thing that does not work: I was hoping you could also set SPRMs that way (to select language, caption etc), but you can't because you can't set SPRMs in the VMG domain (argh!), you have to be in the VTS domain...
I can't think of a simple workaround at this point (you can't jump from the VMG domain to a dummy VTS menu pgc, it has to be an entry menu I guess). Any idea?


This procedure isn't completely straightforward, but I could be made automatic (there's nothing "smart" about it). For tricky DVDs, maybe it could prove useful?

OK, I tried a 4th DVD (Monsters Inc), and of course I found a snag!

- The method mentioned in my previous post will only work if the destination where you want to land automatically is accessible from the VMG domain. This is bad because if I'm not mistaken you can only get to root, chapter, angle, audio, or subpic menus. If you want to land anywhere else, (any other LU menu) then you can't do it the way I describe it. However, most of the time, you want to land in an entry point menu I guess, so that's not really a problem.

- However, this means the solution I gave won't always work: Suppose I want to land in the root menu of VTS-1, but the root menu has no button, no video, and just a set of pre and post commands. This means I have to stop playback (to read registers) right before the first precommand of this root menu, which a break won't do (since there's no cells to display, I'll just go straight through to the postcommands, not what I want).
The solution is to put an "exit" command instead of a "break" command at the top of the precommands of the target root menu. This way, as soon as Mark's Tray DVD hits this point, the execution stops (and hopefully the registers are not modified). The rest of the procedure is identical as in the post above. This works fine for Monsters Inc. Also, don't forget to remove the exit command (and not just replace it with a nop which could screw up goto instructions below).

- On monsters inc, the aspect-ratio menu is after the main menu! I don't see a good way of dealing with that automatically (i.e. bypass that menu). It's easy enough to do by hand in PgcEdit, but the scenario where you could "teach" the DVD player where you wanted to land seems to collapse.

I'm afraid in such cases, menuedit (registered, which I don't have) is the best solution ;)

I had already the idea of breakpoints and bookmarks features in PgcEdit: you set a breakpoint to the PGC you want to jump to, then launch the trace. When the playback reaches the breakpoint, you can copy the GPRM and SPRM configuration to a bookmark, to be able to resume the trace at this point whenever you want.

Adding the code to create the Set GPRMs command in the PF-PGC (or to copy them to the clipboard) is easy.

As you said, the Set SPRMs, and the jump to the target are more difficult to handle.

A solution to the jump is to create a new PGC in the VTSM domain, and change his type to an unused one, for example, Angle menu (rarely used). Then add the PUO to prohibit the use of this menu button. In the new PGC, it is easy to set the GPRMs and SPRMs, and jump to any menu or title.

Another solution is to find out an unused GPRM, initialize it in the FP-PGC, and compare it in the Root menu to jump to the target, or process the original Root menu commands.

The 2 solutions you suggest are exactly the ones I thought of while lying in bed (gee, I need to get a life)! I saw the "Find unused GPRMs" in PgcEdit, and that gave me the idea of using one to achieve what we want. I think that's the easiest solution.
Adding a PGC is feasible too, but guess what, in the Monsters Inc example, all menu types were used in that VTS! So that solution wouldn't work for that specific DVD.
Breakpoints, trace, watching registers... man, you're coming up with a full-fledged DVD debugger!!!!!

Hey, not to beat a dead horse, but I really love PgcEdit! I'm having too much fun with it (kind of like people did with IFOEdit a while back).
One suggestion: If you insert a command in a PGC, could you possibly increment all the gotos in that area (pre or post command) that point to a line *after* the command you inserted, so they point to the same spot as before. Same if you delete a command? (decrement them) I got bitten by that a couple times last night (I wasn't paying attention, added a nop and that totally screwed up playback).

I tried the "go straight to the title menu" on Ice Age, and I can't find a way to do it, because you go to the title menu *twice* during normal DVD playback. Once before you've actually setup the aspect ratio, then because you haven't set that up, it jumps to the aspect ratio menu, and after that jumps back to the title menu.
So putting an "exit" in the title menu simply kills the DVD, and I can't use Mark's Tray DVD player to read the registers :( (ok, I could use a register and count the number of times I reach the title menu, but that's really far beyond what I was trying to achieve - a simple and systematic way to setup your playback as you want it).
THIS is why we need your trace function with breakpoints! You could keep on running after the first breakpoint, then read the registers the second time you reach the breakpoint... I sure hope you can pull it off!

There's 2 approaches I take - first, I initialize a register to a special value in the first play PGC, and then either jump to the main movie title, or to a menu in the same title set as the main movie. (I generally pick a register that gets set to some value by the target PGC.) (*)

Then I add precommands to the target as follows (for this example, the change to the first play PGC was to add initialization of r15 to 26985: [71 00 00 0f 69 69 00 00] )

For a movie PGC:
1. if GPreg 15 != 26985 goto line 3 [00 b1 00 0f 69 69 00 03 ]
2. setSTN Audio 1 subtitle off: [51 00 00 80 80 81 00 00 ]


If I'm jumping to a menu PGC (which I might do if the movie PGC has lots of goto's; I didn't know that PGCEdit could renumber them - I've been doing everything manually - or if the menu PGC already sets streams and registers the way I like and I just want to have it jump to the movie) then I add a command to jump to the movie title. Or, if the movie starts with warnings or previews as part of the main PGC, I skip past them by jumping to the movie's starting chapter (which definitely has to be done outside the movie's PGC, or you loop!):

For a menu PGC, where want to start with Chapter 2:
1. if GPreg 15 != 26985 goto line 4 [00 b1 00 0f 69 69 00 04 ]
2. setSTN Audio 1 subtitle off: [51 00 00 80 80 81 00 00 ]
3. Jump_VTS_PTT jump to title 1 chapter 2


Also, if there isn't an entry menu available, but not all the entry menu types are used, I twiddle the bits to flag one of them as a subpicture, audio, angle, or chapter menu. (Note that you have to change the "Video Manager Menu existance mask" as well as enabling the bits in the specific menu.)

(*) Note - if there isn't a suitable register, then you would also have to add a line explicitly setting the register you used to some other value.

I recently did Ice Age (NTSC, Region 1), but I think that I had it start right up in the movie. (That's how I edit all the stuff that my kids watch.)

Yes, I can see how your solution works... A side note is that pgcedit lets you change a menu's type (right click on it and you'll see a submenu to do that) in one shot.
I think what I was not able to get to work was the idea of jumping directly from the PGC to the main menu, and initializing everything the way it should be (so the DVD plays normally). But your solution is definitely along the lines of the way I've been doing it (using a free gprm to remember whether it's the first time etc).
