View Full Version : anamorphic -> letterbox.. video height question

I am using TMPGEnc to convert an anamorphic widescreen video (352x288 MPEG1) into a letterbox version. I'm doing this by re-encoding
the video with the setting "Video Arrange Method" set to "Custom Zoon (center)". When applying this option, it asks you to specify a new height (and width) for the video output. I figured anamorphic is supposed to be 33.3% better resolution, so to make letterbox, I take 66.6% of 288.. so 192 pixels high, and leave the width alone. This seems fine, but to my eyes the output letterbox video seems a little bit too squashed. Is 192 the correct height or have I made a mistake?
Help much appriciated.
Thanks.

I'm doing starwars at the moment and I've stretched mine into pseudo anamorphic but because of greedo talking I left the black bars on in virtual dub and made them full black with Letterbox(106, 96)

then I bicubic resized to 720 x 680 and cropped 106, 94 using a null transform off the top and bottom. that got me a 720 x 480 file but with 2.35:1 anamorphic proportions. I think the film, minus bars worked out to about 366 high.

366? But maximum VCD height is 288 pixels.

Anyway nevermind I sorted it out.. 192 pixels does look fine.. I'd accidently selected:

4:3 (625 line PAL, 704x576)

instead of:

4:3 (625 line PAL)

All seems fine now.
