Yo!
1. How does the Bitrate affect the quality of the picture?
2. Does converting a DVD using a higher bitrate would result into a better quality of VCD?

I raised this question since even though SVCD plays on my Apex AD703, the movement is not smooth. There are frames being dropped.
Making it into VCD eliminated the problem but the quality degraded.

Now using TMPGEnc, I'm trying to convert an SVCD to VCD but using a customized settings. I'm trying to set the bitrate into something between what the SVCD(NTSCFilm) and VCD(NTSCFilm) are using. At least the setting which would eliminate frame drops but still maintain better quality of picture.
Do you think Bitrate setting would resolve my problem?

This is basic stuff, you could've found it anywhere. The Doom9 guides likely explain it somewhere, for that matter.

1. Higher = better.
2. Yes.

Using VCD isn't the greatest idea in the world, don't expect quality miracles. I assume you've got it set to do 1 CD, since otherwise you wouldn't have problems with quality. You'll need to set to at least 2 CDs for most movies and stick with SVCD if you want quality. I personally like to use no less than 1800 average bitrate.

Rabur my advice to you is CDRW and chapters.

The only way to know what the best settings are for you is to pick a starting point from reading VCDhelp and then using a complicated chapter or two start playing with bitrates. Using CDRW will make this a much cheaper ability.

I spent two solid weeks just testing myself. Don't forget that you have to consider the Min as well. Maybe you need to raise this? Maybe your audio bitrate is too low? Maybe it's too high? Maybe your video bitrate is too high?

My starting point advice is to use for video 2530 MAX, 2300 Max AVG, Min Avg unchecked, Min 300. Audio set to 224.

I have just been over at Vcdhelp and in the comments it seems that the 703A is not a very compatible player. Make sure you don't have that one.

Thanks for the advice.
I would play around with the bitrate using a CDRW (i just hope my player supports and can play CDRW).
Also, my player is AD703 not AD703a.
