View Full Version : Radeon and WDM capture driver - works?

I just got a Radeon 7500 all-in-wonder and so now I'm looking at pretty much being forced to accept directx 8, and no longer capturing with my favorite util - avi_io. I know about the wrappers and so forth, but they rarely work trouble free, and rarely in all instances. ATI has released WDM drivers, but they don't really specify exactly what they fix, just what they are and when to install. I was looking for someone with real experience using them to capture with something like virtualdub which will not do a directx capture, but uses vfw devices. There is a wrapper at this link for wdm->vfw capture:

I suppose I will testbed it in a bit when I have a chance, and backup my windows path and check out directx8 and the wdm drivers then (microsoft backup is the only useful program I've found in windows 98, even better than ghost for some things:)

If anyone else has specific knowledge, I know some guys are looking for radeon wdm help. Please post here:)

Just go ahead and try it, the Radeon WDM drivers with the vfw wrapper work fine. Just install Directx 8.1b, reboot, then install the WDM drivers from the ATI site (I find the ones that come with Catalyst 2.4 the best in terms of quality)

If you are using XP, the WDM wrapper is installed automatically. In Win2k it's one simple line to add to the registry. I don't use 98SE, but I'm sure it works just as well.

Without the WDM wrapper (suggested), you have to capture with WDM apps (iuVCR is my favourite). With the wrappers, you should be able to use legacy apps like VDub, avi_io etc.
