how do I convert the Eagles Hell Freezes Over dvd?

hi there,

I heard there was problems with encoding this dvd what with it being a hybrid disc. However I thought that it was because of a mix of DTS with pcm audio, but I see it was because of the different footage on behind the scenes at lower quality, to that of the concert itself.

So I tried to encode it to CVD anyway to see what happens, doing it at CBR seeing as it wasjust a test, tho 91minutes at CBR onto 2 80min cds would be adequate enough.

Anyways,

the start of the resulting mpeg was fine, whether the behind the scenes part was playing. however the rest of the film from the very point that the real concert is about to start, the mpg just displays access viotation message in red letters on black screen for rest of film (like what happens if try to encode a divx with bad frames in it)

Does anybody know how to encode this dvd? I heard from doing a search that some guy did it by seperating the behind scenes with the concert footage and mixing them seperately or something. How would I do that? or any other ways of doing it?

"The Eagles DVD has some weird frames in where it transitions from the behind the scenes stuff to the actual concert. This transition causes a problem with AVISynth. I use AVISynth to deinterlace and then encode using CCE. What I did was to use DVD2AVI and create two separate .d2v projects (behind the scenes and the actual concert). I cut the behind the scenes stuff a couple of frames short to get rid of the bad frames. Then I encoded the two .d2v projects and reauthored."



any help? :) I checked to see if after pressing to read the cd in first place if there was for example a different cut one saying 5mins for behind scenes and a 90min one for the main concert, for example, however the dvd accord to dvd2svcd only holds that one 96mins or however long it was and could not choose any shorter version or see any obvious way of seperating it

Sounds to me like all he did was a primitive frame-selection technique (what we all had to do before 1.1.0x) - just try using D2S's frame selection, and removing the behind the scenes footage.

errrr....how do I do that? :confused:

I thought you could only choose specific cut point to cut out the end credits somehow in version 1.1.0 and above? however I use 1 0 9 build 3 as I can then use bicubic and temporal smoothing as 1.1.0 and above seems to have lost it unless I go changing the logs :s

First, you really need to get the latest version. Second, the latest version hasn't lost those abilities, they just aren't quite so obvious. You have to add the code into the avisynth script manually. Don't worry, that isn't tough. Go to the advanced forum and at the top open the "avisynth script database" topic for samples.

In the latest version, frame selection is as easy as ticking the box in the conversion tab, and wee bit of work thereafter.

You may have to cut out each section individually, and get several muxed files from inbetween all the behind-the-scenes stuff you need to cut out. I'm not sure as I don't know anything about the movie.

Hiya,

as requested by guy here, Plainview, I did manage to successfully convert this Eagles DVD properly.

Firstly, I still used DVD2SVCD v1.0.9 Build 3 as this is my preferred one, tho am sure the newer versions wont pose any problems.

The problem in itself was quite simple.

Once the encode was finished normally, playing back the file, the moment the concert itself was about to start, was when the conversion would screw up.

So simple way, was to strip out all the crap at the start where they're talking etc in the low quality vid footage before the gig starts.

so what to do.


1) Load up DVD2SVCD

2) Press the disc button to read the CD info as usual. The time probably says 1 : 38 : 30 on it.

3) Make sure for audio option you've selected the 2 channel track, not the DTS 6 track one (beware you'll need lot of HD to extract all that uncompressed audio)

4) Press the Movie Length arrow button to bring up the chapters.

5) UNTICK chapters 1, 2, 3 and 4. (these chapters are the low qual interview junk)

6) close that box.

7) Encode as normal. It should encode no problem now.

by the way, this is done from memory on which chapter to start from (ie chapter 5) I may be mistaken and it might turn out that you should untick chapter 5 too where the gig starts....but am pretty sure it was 5 the starting point)


hope that helps. and if anyone wants any guides for joining 2+ cd divx's with ac3 for single file conversion, or perfect way to fix films that the audio casually drifts out then I have them solved too and could write a step by step.

The concert itself on Eagles: Hell Freezes Over does, in fact, begin with chapter 5. I unchecked chapters 1, 2, 3, & 4 in the pulldown box (Conversion Tab, Movie Length box). It worked, although I've got to play with my encoder settings and try again because my SVCD result included too much border on left and right (it didn't crop the picture though--all is there) and stretched the video a little up and down--I used the following settings to get this not quite right result:

If someone spots something in the above settings that caused this result, I'd appreciate knowing. Meanwhile, I'm gonna try it again using Simpleresize. The main thing is that after weeks of trying, I have an SVCD which sounds great, even though the picture isn't just right. There is simply a bad "spot" as the original DVD transitions from the introduction part to the concert. Fortunately, the really routinely watchable and worthy part (the concert itself) starts with chapter 5 and that part encodes OK. A truly great concert. Thks again for the help with this.

I recently ran into the "Hybrid" problem myself, doing "Band Of brothers" which caused all kinds of weird problems. MarkRB suggested that I play with the "force film" settings under the DVD2AVI tab. I turned "Force Film" on and they encoded perfectly. You might have to use "Force Film" off. Only trial and error will prove which you actually need.
Just a suggestion for something else to try, rather than giving up part of the DVD...

Thks for the suggestion. I tried the Force Film off previously and got the same "avisynth error" that every other combination I had tried also gave at about 10 minutes into the encode. The specific error code I got was:

Using TMPGE:
"Avisynth: Caught an access violation at 0x02c81dd7, attempting to read from 0x0347e5b2"
Using CCE 2.50:
"cce encoding failed; Error: video check-sum is different from that of previous pass. Source video data or time code may be different. Please check video tape or the information file. Current: checksum = 003e33a7 Previous: checksum = 003e49ca"

The first time or two I changed setting and let the encode run to completion. The audio was always OK, but the picture was always a black screen with a red box in the middle. I'm actually happy to cut out the intro portion of this DVD; I bought the DVD so I have this portion if I ever wnat to watch it again, which I doubt.

There is a cce checksum patch. Search around in the forum and you can download this. Beware however, that this still may not fix your problem, it's just a workaround to the CCE error.
