I don't know where else to turn. I have searched everywhere for help on correcting my icons in "my computer". When I open "my computer" it should show the c-drive icon along with all my other devices. However, the icon it shows is one that resembles when, for example: a saved directory that your computer does not recognize the file. The correct icon is there for about 2 seconds then it always changes to the incorrect one. The same goes for my DVD optical drive. It shows an icon for a zip drive and it reads zip even though it is my optical drive

Both icons work correctly when clicked upon. Everything works like normal, but the icons are incorrect. Please, someone help. I am at a loss as to how to fix this problem. I have even reinstalled xp using the repair option.

Thanks for any input.

Do a search for a file called "shelliconcache" on system and delete it (enable hidden file/folders)
Restart.
Also maybe check in safe mode (F8 on boot)
