Let me see if I have gotten this straight. When a NTSC film is made, the video is in 29.97 fps mode if it says FILM in the dvd2avi progress screen. So that means that the film has been telecined with 6 fps from 23.976 to 29.97 fps. So to reencode the video in cce and avisynth, I must force film of 23.976. This will prevent the jerkiness in playback mode on my settop player. After the encoding I need to do a pulldown to convert the video back to 29.97 fps before I remux in ifoedit with the audio, correct? I did a small 4 minute clip in dvd2avi and forced film of 23.976 and remuxed without doing a pulldown and it played in my settop just fine.

AFAIK, Inverse Telecining is used when 1) the playback device requires progressive frames, such as a PC monitor, or 2) when the encoding process expects progressive frames, or 3) when the encoding framecount can be cut by 20% without harm.

"Jerky" playback will be seen when an Inverse Telecine has been performed on unTelecined content. In that case, the process removes 20% of the frames, not necessarily the extra frames created during the Telecining process. There are other causes of "jerkiness" in playback, though this is a fairly common one for those new to NTSC encoding.
