I have purchased a Pioneer 105 from a local computer fair and purchased one 'INTENSO' brand (www.intenso.de) DVD-R with it. The media refused to be recognised as a writeable disc in the drive so I borrowed an ALL4MATS (www.all4mats.com)DVD-R from a friend which I burned a DVD Movie on to at 1x and that played perfectly  . Is there a list of media that the 105 does not like. I noticed someone selling 15 Datawrite DVD-Rs on Ebay because their 105 didn't like them and I dont want to buy a spindle of media that will prove incompatible. The INTENSO disc recognised fine in my friends 104 writer however so I'm even more confused. I also have a Ricoh DVD+R writer and haven't had any blank media recognition problems with that. ANyone else have any experience of this?

afaik Intension doesn't have a media Identifier code.. could be the reason why the A05 doesn't like it.

I know I'm answering my own question here but here's some more media reports at multiple speeds. Hope my research has helped somebody. I wish I'd bought an A04 as it doesnt seem t have these myriad of cheap media burning problems.

On the INTENSO website they specifically say they work with Pioneer writers though they aren't specific with the model numbers. I have used this brand in my +R Ricoh and they are fine. This sucks! Sort it out Pioneer!

I suggest that You read up on the topic and sort your attitude. Intenso sells DVD-R from CD-Fabrik Dessau and DVD+R from Prodisc an Ritek.
Therefore, your experiences with their media are not in any way related to the quality of their DVD-R-media.
Both media scored badly in c't's test.
Getting bad burns from Intenso is a result of the old garbage-in-garbage-out rule.

The Intenso disc cost 1gbp, I wasn't aware these were classed as sub-par media. If that's the case then fine.

Check out CalOptic.com
www.caloptic.com
We just done the test with their 4x DVD-R media.
Sony DRU-500.
Pioneer A05 and 105
TEAC DVW50E-002 4x DVD-R - same Pioneer Engine.
It works on all of the above drive.
Hint: for Pioneer A04/104 with firmware 1.31 and Toshiba SD-R5002
CalOptic.com 1x Ritek will write at 2x.
Peace.
