I've the Pinnacle PCTV pro and I also have these dropped frames when capturing a vhs tape. If the video doesn't jerk ignore it.

Set the highest bitrate possible in XVID (or ideally, select quantizer 1). Also, change min Keyframes to 1 and Max to 1. This will make everyframe a keyframe, at 720x576 that equates to about 80-200 kbytes perfame. About 30-50 at 352x288. You should have plenty of recording time and good results.

Alternitavly, use a 'Lossless' codec like HuffYUV that will capture to AVI without loosing any detail, though as I have found XVID at these high settings is not quite as good, but doesn't use that much CPU and the results when you are watching the file are fine.

If you sieve through frame by frame, you will see problems with artifacts, but as the source is a 20 year old VHS, shouldn't be the major concern.

There are DV codecs avalible but under VirtualDub, codecs preform not that great if you dont have the hardware, your computer is wrapping a software DV codec and creating an AVI file. The results can be not that great but I dont have too much experience on that front.

If I set Xvid and quantizer 1 and record with 768*288 I got ~2500 KB/s (without setting your keyframe intervall) and not 200-300!

But the problem is not the CPU usage. I got them even if it is ~30%! These dropped frames doesn't cause a sync problem, because VirtualDub resamples the audio if some frames are dropped. If the video looks fine you can ignore them.

Ideally, a steady framerate with no dropped frames would, even if not noticable, would be much desired over any dropped frames as some programs can mess things up afterwards.

From Sticky at top of page: First lets clear some misconceptions that many users have. Dropped frames are not a disease that needs to be cured. It is simply a solution to maintain A/V sync by dropping or doubling a frame. The problems start when you have dropframes which are not caused by A/V sync algorithm. If you have so many dropped frames that you will notice them (the video "stutters") then the problem is NOT your capture software (if you use a good one) but in your system (software and/or hardware) and/or source (e.g. bad VHS tape). It is normal that Huffyuv clips stutter as this codec was not meant to be used for playback, so you should compress it before watching and if the picture "stutters" then you have a real problem.

i would say if it plays fine then leave it alone ;)

how will it play fine if it drops frames?

this excerpt i didn't liked from the start:
dropped frames ARE A disease that NEEDS to be cured!!!
1 dropped frame is VERY visible->trust me....you don't see any of those on dvd's if you're wondering.......
if you give me 2h video with 25 drops (that's about normal with normal VD version) and 2h video without drops (that's VDSync's normal, but with somewhat altered sound....i don't hear any difference btw.) guess what will i pick........(remember:sound modification can't be noticed....)

EVERY droped frame is visible as it means 1/25 (1/30 for ntsc) of the second is missing from timeline-->try that on moto race etc.!

statement in the FAQ is misconception on it's own!
[and if the makers of the FAQ prefer pieces of their video-timeline missing( as some of them prefer lo-res capture ) , well then what's more to say.....]
better solution is to resample sound than to drop or double frames.......
(VDsync does that pretty fine.....)

also as i constantly say........try wdm capturing (instead of vfw) for less drops...however.....i don't guarantee you a/v sync on wdm

cheers
