View Full Version : Pal svcd/vcd works fine on my ntsc tv, but why not dvd?

Pal svcds play at 25fps and have 576 lines, just like the dvd, but why can the svcds play just fine while the dvds play in stretched b&w? Could it be that my ntsc tv just doesnt like the increased amount of H-pixels with the 576 pal lines? I have wondered about this for awhile now but never bothered to ask anyone.

This is the last question ill ask about pal/ntsc, i swear!

which dvd player?

what it may be doing is trying to playback ALL dvds in native format, rather than converting the PAL so its viewable on a NTSC tv.

and your ntsc tv probably only likes NTSC ;)

Pioneer dv-343 on 1997 model Panasonic 31" superflat using s-video. When the pal dvd is inserted even the dvd menu operations and osd's turn to stretched b&w. I have lots of downloaded pal dvd mpeg material and it pains me to convert them to ntsc and take a rather large hit in quality, but if theres no way around it then what choice do i have.

How about forcing it to use NTSC?

Just hold "Next Track" on the DVD when powering it up to switch between PAL, NTSC and AUTO.

You can do that? It doesnt seem to do anything on mine. It just makes it jump through the titles #s before the menus pops up, I dont see any ntsc/pal/auto selection.

Or buy an Apex dvd player,Fry's have the AD-1500 wich does PAL-conversion for $49.95 right now.

I've done that with a couple Pioneer-DVD's and especially the 343. Make sure that the drive is empty and then put the DVD in standby mode. Now hold "Track Forward" on the DVD (not the remote) and press power. Now you should see either PAL, NTSC or AUTO popup in the display window.

I tryed that, nothing. Are you using a european model or something? Mine is an R1 model.

Yes, it's european models i've tried this on. Strange that the R1 versions don't have that function :(
