View Full Version : 3:2 pulldown 23.976 to 29.97 fps

So confused....
Almost any NTSC DVD title is coded with 23.976, but every guide want's me to recode framerate to 29.97 ??
The reason I ask is, why convert framerate ??? I can read that many people do it cause otherwise many authoring programs rejects the video file.
But if the DVD is 23.976 why not just leave it as it is, and then remux the video and the audio again with Ifoedit, then the only change would be the bitrate quality..
Maybe there is something I have missed..
All I know is, that if I use 3:2 pulldown with TMPG, then the audio is out of sync, but if I leave it at 23.976 then it's ok.
Or If I use the Pulldown.exe to set the framerate to 29.97 then it is also OK.
To conclude WHY change the framerate to 29.97, it takes time to use the Pulldown.exe, and the DVD standard seems to be 23.976 NTSC FILM anyway.
Hope someone could help me straighten this out
Have a great newyear...

wow i had the same problem
but if i understand it correctly:you are correct alot of dvds are film
23.97 but the headers have pulldown thats why they play 29.97
if you do a force film it takes the flags out so you can encode at a better rate (less frames more room for bitrate)then u use pulldown to apply header informatin for dvd ntsc
some movies are ntsc 29.97 thats not a pulldown effect some actually have that
im just learning but i think thats how it works
your not reencoding when u use pulldown(just inserting header changes)
is this correct?

When I pulldown I use the DOS program pulldown.exe, and that dosen't reencode.
So if I understand correctly I have to use pulldown so that the outcome will be 29.97 otherwise the DVD-players won't be able to play it ?? And by using Pulldown, I'm not changing the number of frames in the movie, just adding some information telling that the movie shall be played with 29.97 ??
I must say that the european system PAL is so much simpler and better.
Can't undestand why FILM framerate is even used on DVD's when it is changed to 29.97 anyhow ;)
P.S. When you say you "had the same problem", what did you do to solve it?, I asume you also use TMPG
Well thanks anyway.

It's done so the resulting mpeg2 stream can be displayed properly on NTSC TV sets. What you're essentially doing with pulldown.exe is called Telecining, you can read more about it here: http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/synch.htm

Most modern(read modern transfer) DVD discs have progressive 23.976 MPEG2 video stream with rff/tff flags set up for people with legacy equipment. if you want FILM quality and FILM framerate why don't you buy a progressive DVD player and a real 480p capable TV set?

I live an a PAL standard contrey, and do not have any problems encoding PAL material.
BUT I must say I give up, someone help me if you can..
I use doom9's DVD -> DVD-5 guide
Here I follow the steps exactly.
I use DVD2AVI to make project file, and DVD2AVI says 29.97 fps 98% FILM, therefore I use "FORCED FILM" and save the project
When it comes to choosing encoder I choose TMPG, to get better quality, I have never had problems with ReMPEG, but I would like to try getting the better quality.
Then I learned if I choose Encode mode: "3:2 Pulldown when playback", and thereby setting framerate to 23.976 fps (internally 29.97 fps.) in TMPG, then my outcome will be totally out of sync, and stuttering.
Then I learned that I could use Pulldown.exe instead and just choose the 23.976 fps in TMPG. But this give me the exact same problem.
Oh, and I use Ifoedit 0.95 to remux my new video file with the ripped VOB's
If any of you have gotten this guide to work, or do something a bit different please tell me, cause I'm about to #¤%"#¤%¤%#%#

I had a problem with remuxing the TMPGEnc m2v streams in IfoEdit, similar to your problem, video stuttering, audio out of synch. My final solution was to follow the guides with a small change, I use the author feature in IfoEdit instead of Remux, it works well. See more info in
