"being john malkovich" too small while quality very poor

hi,

still had "being john malkovich"-vobs lying around and so i decided to finally reencode them with xvid.

my last try to encode it was with divx5, but something went wrong (i thought) since the video came out around 600mb whilst targeting for about 1100mb.. i anyway had to reinstall and postponed investigation..

now with xvid i only seem to get around 600mb again (still encoding, but virtualdub says so..).

strange, since in divx5 the movie really looked shit, heavy blocks/artifacts.. i mean, the movie might be _extremely_ compressible, but when saturated, it should look way better..

anybody remembers having encoded it?

Yes I have encoded it a long time ago,when xvid hadnt bframes,qpel or any of these goodies.You can get it with ac3 in 1cd and full res.

well, the problem is, that i wasn't stisfied with the quality at all, so simply putting it onto a cd wouldn't satisfy my at all now :(

anyway, i am encoding it again without bframes/qpel and without any filtering, with lanczos resizing and mpeg-quantizers.

i remeber having encoded it ages ago with divx3.11 i think and i filled 2 cds back than. but encoding-technologie advanced...

it's likely a decoding problem
what are you using to decode it?

it was indeed a decoding problem. after changing from ffdshow mplayer to ffdshow nics, everything looked very nice all of a sudden :)

When watching an encode which is saturated at 600mb, everything will look even nicer and you will be much better off if you use NO post-processing at all in ffdshow! ;)

edit: btw, I almost never use any post-processing in ffdshow and like to watch all my encodes as they are, which absolutely pleases me more ;).

Yep. :)

Post-processing is there to improve bad encodings (speak: to hurt the eye a little less). And since we're talking about XviD here ... ;)

Okay, that was a little too B/W. I hope you get the point, though. The target is to do an encoding that needs no PP at all. If you produce something that needs PP, then you must have done something wrong.

Almost two hour long movie also so I would go for two discs.

This seems to be turning into a big issue as we have had many threads lately about the subject. I have two examples where XviD produces horrible output and I can't figure out how to get better quality. Anyway, the two movies are notoriously compressable regardless of the codec settings or resolution.

The sources are clean and I've managed to find ways to increase bit consumption but never to my satisfaction. I have yet to produce a satisfactory encode of these movies and I'm almost drawn to try out RV9 with anamorphic encoding for these. The only thing I have yet to try with XviD is Quant 1. If anyone has any other suggestions, let us know.

realy if its dark and slow then its going onto 1cd, or if its a kubrick movie then its going onto 1cd also, only kubrick ive got on 2cds is lolita, keeping in mind he averages around 150min.

I have them in 1cd too.The others made with xvid and ac3,alien and 2001 with divx3.11 and mp3.Maybe can get them with xvid and ac3 in 1 cd too,using bframes.I ll try

Add US Navy Seals to that list;) I'm now on my 17th encode of this movie*sigh*

The common factor of these movies is that they are dark, same with my flick here(lots of of underwater scenes too:devil: ). Using the BlockBuster filter to add noise along with Qpel(latest Koepi build only) does seem to help but still not to my liking. Also, I've noticed that you might be better off not using any smoothers in your script for these type of flicks. Have you tried playing around with the curve treatment yet?
