I have written a little step by step guide from putting the DVD (cough, cough,, homemade DVD-R of course! lol) into the ROM and then final step the Divx is created!
Edit by manono: Link removed
Let me know what you think guys, and remember it's meant for absolute beginners so please don't think I'm patronising anyone. Any constructive criticism from the Pro's here is VERY welcome, let's make this the Ultimate Divx creating guide for EVERYONE!

Why is everything underlined? It's annoying to read, so it might take me a few more minuets to read and give you some advice. :p

I don't understand something...
You say "unless the movie is widescreen and VERY short the quality of the end DivX is not very good with only 1-CD"...
What do you mean by "very short" ? You mean 90-120 minutes ?
Beccause 95% of time, I use only 1-CD (and I never go below "640 * 2xx" resolution), and I'm very happy of the result.. lol. I'm not sure that it would be a noticiable difference if I were using 2-CD for 90 min movies..
But of course, if you set "max keyframe interval = 30" and "max quantizer = 4", it's pretty impossible to make a good quality 1-CD DivX ;-)
EDIT : ( That's right that you should avoid underlining the whole page.. it's really hard to read the text)

As seween inferred, it is not necessary to alter the max key frame interval to 30(like someone elses guide that i read ages ago said). 10x the FPS is good enough. Changing the max quantizer to 4 is not a particularly good as on a 2pass encode, the best quantizer values will be used anyway. 10 is small enough, though I vary it depending upon compressibilty. A black screen at the end of a movie that goes on for 30secs will be encoded at quant4 with 9 keyframes in it and similar with all the low motion and still background scenes(thought they will probably use a quant of 2-4). It eats your bits up too fast.
I think you should say quant10 and max keyframe interval 250. For movies with poor compressibility(eg Road Trip which is the worst I have ever come across(but will look good on 2CDs due to a short length so can be discounted for the terms of this discussion and is an example of bad compressibility only *phew*)) or poorly authoured DVD's, you will not get the best quality even on 2CD's with your settings.
For newbies it is good that you recommend to always do 2CD backups as they don't understand about compressability, filtering and resizing techniques.
I seem to always get good results with q-pel, but that is a matter of taste (definately use it for TV viewing). The majority response on this forum is that you shouldn't use GMC, it causes to many playback problems, though some people seem to like it.
You should recommend that people check the box and inner ring of their DVD that they are backing up to find the aspect ratio, and if it isn't written on it yeah right, then use 1.85.
You should put a url for DivX networks instead of kazaalite for people looking for DivX Pro 5.02 (then refer them to the sticky about removing adware on this forum).
I don't like the underlining or the cursing:p . Other than that, I think it is another good ripping guide for newbies. Vidiomi is apparently more stable than the other easy encoders (I haven't tried to use any of them besides xmpeg which crashed half way through).
Perhaps consider including DVD Decrypter and authDVD.exe (an authentication program from nic the xvid developer which can be found here http://nic.dnsalias.com/AuthDVD.exe. If you do, ask him before linking directly to his downloads. You will have less emails about ripping problems if you include DVD Decrypter as it is vastly superior in every way to smart ripper (now).
Hope I was helpful and not over critical :) .

The settings I have put into my guide are for MAX quality, I am testing the finished DivX on my award winning 19Inch iiyama Pro monitor. I can honestly say that with the settings in my guide it is VERY difficult to tell the difference @ FULLSCREEN between the original vobs and the finished DivX provided you stick to the rule that 1 hour of DVD = 702Mb (80min cd-r) @ ALMOST dvd quality. (Obviously movies with less fast moving action can be compressed more but WHY bother messing around and changing all the time when DVD-R costs 40p and burners are only £199.)
Could I please ask people to TRY my settings before slatting my guide, I think you will be surprised with the quality.

@Leftfield_2k2:
Please remove the link to Kazaa in your guide. Just show people the legal way like ?¿öM¿? says, there really is no need for warez. If you don't remove it yourself we'll have to remove the link to your guide, because as such it is against forum rules, but I would rather we do not have to do that.
Could I please ask people to TRY my settings before slatting my guide, I think you will be surprised with the quality. You posted it here to ask people's opinions, so don't be surprised if you receive criticism as well :). It's all meant for improvement.

I only respect peoples opinions and views about my guide if they have actually tried my guide. I have no time for ignorant people who think they know it all!!
Where does my guide link to WAREZ!?!?!? All I have said is for people to STOP e-mailing me asking for DivX 5.02 Pro, and to get it themselves from Kazaalite. It is a FREE download from the link in my guide but some people e-mail me saying they cannot get the link to work so where is the harm in them downloading this FREE software from a P2P client?!?

Hi-
You didn't do as Acaila requested and your link has been removed. You can post it again when the requested change has been made.
In addition, the previous suggestions were good ones politely offered, but you insisted on coming back strongly. So far in this thread, you've broken Rule 6 regarding warez and Rule 4 regarding your insults of other forum members. Not getting off on the right foot, I'd say. Please read the Forum Rules (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm) and the sanctions you're in line for if this keeps up.

Kazaalite itself is warez, read the install agreement.

I have read all the quotes, but I didnt find the guide (or link to it). Can anyone please tell me where I can find it.
I am beginner in this. I have ripped only one DVD, and I have A lot of problems with it (wing commander). My next DVD will be Black Rain.
This is quite An old movie (1989.), that means it is not so quality recorded, so I would like to make it on 2CD-s.
I used many guides but there were always troubles.
Please help...suggest me something...

Hi-
The link to his guide was removed. In its place I offer you Doom9's GKnot-DivX5 Guide (http://www.doom9.org/gknot-main3.htm).

I have Tryed it to, but it didnt`t work something well.
there was an error when I ran compressibility check The program give me error:
+compressibility check: DivX 4.
+unknown error: compressibility check failed.
and when I added all the necessary jobs to gordian knot (After you set the settings for divx 5.02 codec and for audio and then run the jobs) the program gaves me:
EXCEPTION: list index out of bounds (3).
EXCEPTION: encoder thread terminated.
I don`t know what I always set wrong. Maybe it is problem in DivX 5.02 codec....?
Please help...

It sound like you don't have DivX 5 installed properly. Try reinstalling it.

Hi-
It sound like you don't have DivX 5 installed properly.
Very possibly. Try opening VDub and going Video-Compression and check to make sure it's listed there. If you still have the DivX4 codec installed, you might try and uninstall it, as DivX4 and DivX5 sometimes conflict. Then reinstall DivX5 as N_F suggested. A couple of other things you might check. If you're using the AviSynth that comes with the new GKnot, then you can't run the compress test with the Mpeg2Dec3.dll. Also, try and open the .avs in VDub and scroll around to see if VDub crashes. There's a chance the .avs is at fault.

Doom9 and others offer such good advice and guides and yet people ignor it or keep searching for the end of the rainbow...
thats where doom9 hangs out at :D
You dont have to use Gknot, just open Virtualdub and open your file in it and encode it with the right settings doing a 2pass encode.
follow this guide
