View Full Version : Is it possible to create a DVD-9 recorder?

I know that all DVD recorders out in the market today can only record 4.7 gigs, or can fit a single layer DVD on it(without compression). What I would like to know is, considering the fact that recordable, double sided DVD-Rs do exist, is it possible that a dual layer burner can ever be introduced? Just how hard would it be to created a blank DVD that would allow a special DVD burner to burn into that second layer and allow us to create DVD-9s? Is it theoretically possible to ever see such a burner in the market, or is the idea totally impossible? Can dual layer DVDs ONLY be created by pressing? Anyone?

Dude, there's a long thread that went on about this subject recently. Check it out:

It’s probably easier for the manufacturers to make a recorder that records on both side of a DVD10 disc without having the user flip the disc to record on the other side.

That's an interesting idea, DVD recorder that can record on both sides without having to need to flip the disc...While this isn't really a DVD 9 burner, it probably would be theoretically possible to be able to copy a DVD 9 disc onto one of these double sided burners, and play back the disc in it's entirety, with same DVD 9 quality. I suppose the side switch would occur at the layer switch point of the original disc. However, it would only be able to play, without switching sides, on the double sided recorder. Even so, it is a pretty cool idea, I wonder if any manufacturer has thought of it yet.

As you had noted, you'd have to get up and flip the disc when playing it on regular DVD players. Unless the same company makes DVD players that automatically play the other side (like some LD players do).

It's too expensive to manufacture. Besides, no Hollywood studio will make flippers (2 sided discs) anymore so there is no support for it.

Many DVDs are double sided, usually with the widescreen version of the movie on one side, and the full screen version on the other. I've even seen double sided DVD 9s out there. Superman the movie for example has the movie on one side, and alot of DVD extras on the other. So I would think there's a place out there for flipper DVD recorders.

Right, but they're not true flippers where you have to actually flip the disc in the middle of the movie.

It may very well be a reality in a year or so. See the following post:

I don't doubt that there will be a dual layer writer (whether it be BluRay, Ultra Density Optical or 3D Hologram technology) in the future, but I'd be surprise to see a dual layer DVD burner in a year or so.
