This is my first post here, although thanks to the fora here I've finally got Gordian working and am able to rip DVD's successfully.
The catch is, this time it's not about ripping, but about playback. I have a 700 MHz Athlon, 396 MB RAM, Abit KA7-100, generic 16x dvd-rom, GeForce 3 Ti 200, Philips Acoustic Edge 5.1 Sound Card. Everything is running the most recent driver set available, OS is Win2K+SP3. I just tried installing DX9 to see if it would fix the problem, so now I'm running that, but the problem existed when I was using DX8/8.1 too.
Here's the gist of it - I recently installed a new CD-burner and during the install process Windows had a meltdown and would lock up whenever it tried to identify the CD/DVD drives (even if I put the old one back). Ultimately I was forced to reinstall Win2K and restore the registry from a recent backup. But since then the sound won't work correctly. It's still sync'ed and the video playback is smooth, but no matter what audio configuration I use the sound does something wrong.
If I select DirectSound as the audio output, choosing A3D, Dolby Surround, or Stereo modes results in popping, the occasional squawk, and muffled sound with no surround as far as I can tell. If I choose DirectSound 3D the sound doesn't pop or squawk, but it's still muffled and not "3D"/Surround. If I select WaveOut output, it's the same result as with DirectSound modes.
This happens using any DVD player I've tried - WinDVD, PowerDVD, NVidia's NVDVD, so it's not the player.
There are no error messages popping up, no hardware error messages, all DirectX diagostics succeed, and when I use Sonique to play MP3 or WAV audio, or run the diagnostics for the Acoustic Edge card, everything checks out.
If I transcode a DVD2AVI-made AC3 file to WAV, it plays normally.
All I can figure is there's some issue with a codec or a filter or something, from what I've managed to find doing forum searches, but I couldn't find any thread that matched my problem, so here we are. :)
I'm not exactly clear about what codecs might not have been installed or might need to be updated since the last Win2K reinstall that would be specifically related to the DVD playback.
Any ideas? And how exactly do I check these codecs and filters? I've looked in the audio properties control panel and codec list, but I don't see anything saying there's a problem.
