aspi layer + xp

this is just a general query, anyone got xp and ripping without an aspi layer? when i first starting ripping i installed this but after a disc format decided not to bother since i heard it wasn't neccessary with xp, well i can still rip fine without ( although i've not ripped so many films as be4). vstrip recognises its not there but proceeds regardless . . . Is there any reason for xp users to install this layer??

well, i remeber the trouble many people had in the weeks after the release of xp when loads of peolpe couldn't write cds anymore, others had problems ripping, etc..

it seemed, that the guys over at adaptecs somehow forgot to set the according values in the registry that would enable the actual use of aspi by the different installed softwares, so there was no use installing it. when putting the aspi-dll in the folder together with the program in trouble, it suddenly worked in most cases and so someone figured the registry-lack and wrote a small registry-file that corrects this issue.

i don't point to it, because i do not know of any official download for this file, but if you do a search in google for [download aspifix], you'll get links all over..

to answer you actual question: since i am using aspifix programms all work like a charm, where without any aspi my xp gives quite surprising results differing from program to program.

If you use DVDDecrypter for ripping DVDs, then you don't need aspi at all. It uses anohter system (don't remember its name right now), but not aspi (although you can still use ASPI if you want, there is an option in in the config options).

aspi is just an interface. its the interface of choice, (most likely since it comes with 9x oses) for most software, but its not hte only one. dvd decryptor has a few to choose from.. vstrip has 2.. if aspi doesnt work it defaults to the old interface. same result.. the dvd gets ripped. i havent installed any aspi on this xp installed. i use the nt (spti) interface in dd

Windows2000(same core) are using SPTI access for all hooked devices from administrator mode.DVDDecrypter shows that.Of course,if one's having problems,a try to adaptec's aspi(4.71.2 i think) of nero's aspi(with burning rom is already installed),or elby's aspi(clonecd installed) or ever asapi drivers.No conflict here anywhere,but i think the slowest method is through SPTI.
