Gordian Knodt

I used Gordian Knodt from ripping to encoding. I know have 2 files with avi extension. I assume the one that says movie is the one I play. Only when I click it to play it opens itself in media player but will not play, just sits there. It is a large file, about 2 gigs. Anyone have a suggestion?

The Gknot process produces a lot of files. Until you've used it a few times, it's sometimes hard to figure out what each one was produced for.

There will be up to 3 .avi files produced. For example, for a Gknot project called "thingy," you may see:

thingy_Credits.avi -- video only, low quality end credits. Optional, if credits encoded separately.
thingy_Movie.avi -- video only, main movie.
thingy.avi -- completed result, with interleaved mp3 audio and video.

The fact that you have a 2GB _Movie file makes me think that you have a process error. Especially if you don't have the "thingy.avi" file. There may be many reasons, the most likely is a codec failure, and I'll get to that in a moment.

You will have a _Gknot.log file. Open it up and look through it. It will show you the parameters of your encoding, results of each step, and any errors encountered. My guess is that the "muxing" step, where your audio and video are blended together, failed, due to that 2GB useless _movie.avi file.

DivX codec failures, due to inadvertant mistakes made during the install procedure, are very common. Easy to check, and easy to fix, too. They happened most often when people installed Gknot *after* installing DivX 5. Until the latest release of Gknot (0.27), it included DivX 4, and DivX 4 files would overlay DivX 5 files. Ouch!

You can check if DivX 5 is installed properly by starting VirtualDub, (Programs...Gordian Knot...Apps...VirtualDub) and using the Video...Compression command. If you don't see DivX 5 in the list of codecs, just re-install it.
