Best Setup

I have successfully ripped my dvd's. Now I want to encode them to the highest quality. Video and Audio. I would like to put them into avi or divx format...whichever will give me the best quaility. These files will remain on a harddrive and be burned to disk...file size is not an issue. I don't care how big the file is as long as it is as close to DVD quality as I can get it. Can anyone point me to a good guide as well as tell a little about settings for the encoding? The out put will be displayed on a regular 32 inch tv.

Avi is only a container for many different formats like divx and mpg1 and audio like ac3 and mp3 and combinations of them. It's no format.

You'll always loose quality if you convert a mpeg2 stream into another lossy format. So you have 2 options:

- If you want to preserve the exact quality the dvd has, you should strip the unnecessary streams out of the vobs (with ifoedit, for example), discard the menus and play the resulting movie from HD. This leaves you with very big movies (most of them around 5 or 6 GB)

- Use divx, xvid or similar to convert the movie into something smaller with high bitrate or or something like quant=1 or 2, quality 100%
But be warned: if you use these very high quality settings you'll end up in very big files, too.

For the audio part: do you want to convert the audio from 6 channels to 2 channel or leave the audio as it is?
I normally leave ac3 streams as they are giving me the same sound as on the dvd.

Divx is the way I would go. This way I can change the file extension to .avi and it will play in my Media Center. File size is not an issue just quality. What would you recomend for a program that will give high quality?
As for the audio I wish to leave it as is on the DVD. This way I will get the full surround sound.
I would appreciate a recomendation On good progs for ripping as well as encoding.I realize I can search how too's for progs but you seem to understand what I want. And if you could a little info on encoding when the final file will be diplayed on tv monitor. Just a regular 32 inch tv?
