Hi guys,
does anybody know if the a7m266-d Asus board accepts two Athlon XP 2400+ with Thoroughbred core and closed L5 bridge (Changing XP to MP)? I want to buy this combination but don't know if it works.
If anybody has tried this or something similar please tell me.
Thank you

It seems the answer is no. Check this (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41013) out. Even worse, the newly launched TBred MP is not certified for 760 MPX in dual mode if Ramirez's information is correct. Ironic?

ok, after digging around AMD's site (http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ComputingSolutions/0,,30_288_1278_809%5E965%5E2340,00.html), I believe Ramirez's comment (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41013) is incorrect. MP2400+ is TBred. So my question still remains, as same as MvB. Can plain TBred A/B be bridge-tricked to work in dual mode on 760 MPX board?
@MvB
Beware of Asus's board different rev. From the AMD's page, old rev does not work with new TBred core.

Thanks for the answering.
I think I'll buy this stuff tomorrow and we'll see.
if it's not working i'm really pissed of...

@Omol
1. I'D suggest you to read your own posts more carefully.
Your initial question was "Does 760mpx board supports 2 x Thoroughbred-core /B processors"
Whether it's should be "Does 760 board supports
2X plain TBred A/B bridge-tricked proseccors to work in dual mode on 760 MPX board"
Now, since AMD 760 Chipset only supports MP Processors, I've assumed that you're
Talking about new MP TBred/B Processors (2400+ and Up)
So I've replayed accordingly to your question>> ""NO, NOT IN SMP MODE"".
You're never mention anything about bridge-tricked processors like XP2MP at any core.
(Well, Besides Your Very Last Post, but it was to late for me)

Could you please kindly point me out where exactly did I said that they aren't?
The entire list of processors I've posted there is at Thoroughbred-core.!
So, please next time before making any comments like" Ramirez's comments are
Bunch of "bull$$$" Please try to be more specific regarding your own questions!.

@Ramirez
Sorry that you misunderstood my question. English IS NOT my native tongue.
My answer Is>> NO WAY,Not in SMP Mode.
The Following - Athlon MP Thoroughbred-core at .13 microns Processors Are not
Certified or supported in Dual Mode Configuration On a 760mpx Board.
AMD Athlon MP 2400+
AMD Athlon MP 2600+
AMD Athlon MP 2800+
AMD Athlon MP 3000+
AMD Athlon MP 3200+
AMD Athlon MP 3400+
However, any of those processors will run just fine on 760mpx board when only one processor is used.
In the original 64bit PCI thread, I DID ask whether TBred core MP Athlon will work in dual mode or not on 760 MPX board. Well, either my understanding of English is too poor or somehow the words like "not" and "MP" slipped in. I hope you can go visit the AMD's link I posted, it states which 760 MPX supports dual TBred core Athlon MP.
And no need to get mad, I did not say your comments are bunch of "bull$$$". After all, this is supposed to be about computer, supposed to be fun. Not religious war.
peace,

Huh? The bridge trick is not confirmed to work on TBred chip yet! Or you are getting the TBred core MP? They will not be here locally until lunar new year, damn.

You Are Right.
If any offense was taken then I apologize.:)
Anyway, my answer was partly based on very good and reliable Source (http://www17.tomshardware.com/cpu/20020821/athlonxp-06.html)
While you there check out the SMP SUPPORT Section. Tbred/b is listed as not supported on 760 chipset in SMP mode
Which is kinda weird as I know those guys usualy providing bullet-proof information.

Found a site that confirms thoroughbred 2200+ with L5 closed as MP.
http://www.beachlink.com/candjac/TbredDecode0.htm
That gives me a little bit of confidence to try it...

Thanks for the link. Btw MvB, I'd rather get the Tyan 760 MPX board than Asus. You can't oc much on 760 MPX board anyway, and Tyan has one more 32bit pci slot.

There is no need to apologize since I feel no offense at all. Regarding THG, their quality of articles/reviews degraded a lot in the recent years, and too much ads for my taste. Anand, IMHO, is so much better. And even theinquirer is better, if not for their sometime "disinformation". Theirs are much more entertained......;)

Hi!
Bought this stuff (2xAthlon XP Thoroughbred and Asus a7m266-d Rev. 1.04) today and as expected, when i put in the two processors without modification it didn't work, the bios said they wouldn't be MP capable. Then i did the trick with the L5 bridge and volá, both CPU are now Athlon MPs and MP capable.
I'll keep you informed. I'm installing Win2000 now. Let's see how it rocks :D

I have one problem: While installing w2k, the machine shuts down! Shit. I'm trying to find out why.

So, I think I got the problem:
I think the CPUs are getting to hot. After clocking down to 1500 MHz it works perfectly. I'll try to fix this asap.

Wow, Great! Thanks a lot MvB for the info.
Could you please, Post Some Details about how you did this bridge trick?
Is it as described Here. (http://www.vr-zone.com/guides/AMD/AthlonXPUnlock/) ? If so then I'm in lots of troubles because I can't find anywhere this damn" CircuitWorks Silver Conductive Grease"
I'm dying to buy this hardware two, but need some additional info about this issue.

So,
I'm still trying to find out. I got this to 2 possibilties:
1) My powersupply is too weak (460 Watt).
2) The thermal protection build in.
I'll test an additional powersupply and try to find my (what's that called?) heatpaste?

I found this silver conductive grease in the next electronic shop. No problem. Looked different but was for the same purpose.
I think i have a heat problem at the moment, the asus board shuts down when the CPUs are getting too hot.

Found out the following things:
After reducing the memory from 1 GB to 512MB the shutdowns reduce.
single:
One Processor in socket 0 runs flawless.
One Processor in socket 1 sometimes lets the board shut down.
Dual:
After reducing the clock speed from 2000 to 1500 the system somtetimes shuts down, mostly while heavy calculations (3dmark etc)
with speed of 2000 i can't even install a single application.
I think the thermal circuit on the board is broken, because it shuts down if cpu1 reaches about 39 Degrees, that's not much. Could be that i'm mistaken, i'll try to find someting about sporadic shutdowns of this board in the internet.

Juhh! It runs like hell!
The problem was: bios 1008 and no fastwrite!
Put version 1009 on it and rebooted, fastwrite unlike in bios 1008, could be activated. The CPUs are running fine, no shutdown anymore, and it runs like hell with my radeon...
~12000 3dmarks on 1024x768x32 without tweaking anything.... cooooooool!
So finally it was the bios. The old one couldn't handle 2 MP Thouroghbred processors and 133 MHz FSB
Thanks for your good wishes and the help :D

I believe that you can go all the way up and buy two Barton core cpus if you want to. I think it was hardwarezone.com that said so.

It's your power supply that's too weak. I have similar problems. The CPU's draw around 6-8 Amperes each on the +12V rail. Many power supplies only deliver around 12A or 15A there. In addition to the CPU's the +12V rail also powers all your drives (HD,CD etc.)
That's why it helps to underclock, they're simply using less power!
It's probably not heat as we're used to.
So, go buy a new powersupply :)
I've heard strong recommendation for a company called "PC Power & Cooling" , apparently they have the best PSU's (go for model 510ATX or something). Antec has also been recommended (go for True550), and Enermax comes in third. What they all have in common is that they have a very strong +12V rail (over 25A) and are stable in their power delivery, which is what you need
Good luck!
