How can I encode with a distinct framerate

I try to encode a avi file on VirtualDub with Xvid codec,But the codec have not explicitly framerate setting,If there some relation between framerate and quality or other parameters?

I'll take a stab at this one, you might want to attach more info on your question but from what I can glean. Virtualdub allows you to set your frame rate just go to Video -> Framerate and you can choose to decimate at a given interval or set a strict framerate.

In terms of quality
Bigger FrameRate = More Frames to Compress = Lower Quality Video

of course before you go overboard remember that

Lower FrameRate = Jerkier Video = Unwatchable

You also can't increase the smoothness of motion in your video from whats already there. Virtual dub will only use video that it has "input" into it. (don't expect to make any video running at 10 fps run as smooth as 30 fps just by telling Virtualdub to run a larger framerate.

No, chainging the framerate is no matter of the codec.

It's set in virtualdub or your encoding application, and gets handed over to the codec on encoding_init time (where it gets written to the bitstream as well).

So, just enter the framerate you want to, and you're done.

Try ggole'ing for that and read around a bit more, after all this is a very easy and way-too-short approach, there are several things you want to reflect when doing such things.

I still had some puzzle about encoding, what job is done by virtualdub, what is done by codec.
Now I understand, I know I should prepare video data before encode with xvid.

But if some job can be done by Xvid? for example:
The original video is A, The target video is B,C.

Frame number, Frame rate, play time, bitrate
A. 100 frames�C 10fps, 10s 128kbps
B. 50 frames�C 50fps, 10s 128kbps
C. 200 frames�C 20fps�C 10s 128kbps

I must keep the play time and bitrate,so I should cut frames at the condition B and add frames at the condition C. The condition B.C can be done before Xvid encoding, but if Xvid can help to choice to cut the less important frames at the condition B.
