Ok, I am stuck. I have all my VOBs on my hard drive ready to burn. They are 4.5 gigs but are not in .img format. Does making an image add padding like it does w/ SVCD? Cause ifo edit is telling me my files are too big to fit on a 4.7 gig DVD-R. I try making an Image w/ Image tools and I get a 678 KB img file w/ the video_ts.ifo, vob and bup files, but not the main movie files. I am figuring thats cause its too big, but I thought my DVD-Rs were 4.7 gigs. Any help would be appreciated. At this point I'm about to sell the DVD burner for less than I paid cause all the movies I try to burn seem to have to be recoded.

Yup, you've discovered one of the 'issues' in DVD burning. 4.7gb isn't really 4.7gb for burning purposes. The maximum size I've been able to burn (make an ISO image from) is 4.33gb.

Think of it this way. When you buy a 80gb hard disk, how much is usable from Windows? about 75gb. Sorta feels like false advertising - I bought 80gb, I want 80gb usable. Not happening.

And that's because the conversion always has variations, you know 1 GB is not 1000 MB!
I know certainly that 4.7 GB DVDR is really 4.37 GB DVDR so you wont be able to burn more data...
I suggest to calculate with multiples
1024 bites = 1 kb etc....

the disc capacity is 4.700.000.000 bytes.
translating that into GB means 4.37 GB.

absolutely!

1 Byte = 8 bits
1 KB (Kilo-Byte) = 2^10 Bytes = 1024 Bytes
1 MB (Mega-Byte) = 2^10 KB = 1024 KB =
= 2^20 bytes = 1,048,576 bytes
and so on for:
Giga-, Tera-, Peta, Exa-, Zetta-, Yotta- (2^80 bytes :scared: :scared: :scared: )
