I want to know what are the requirements for xvid?
I can play it fine on my 1.4 tbird with geforce3 video but i when played on p3 600 with 32mb video(fury rage pro) the audio is off by a lot - like 3-5 secs. I thought it was the cpu so I swaped the video cards and I got same problem on my 1.4 tbird, so I'm guessing that either I need 64mb video card or my 32mb card is not working to it's full potential. But when played in the slower system the cpu usage is 100%, but I haven't checked the cpu usage in 1.4 tbird when I had the 32mb video card in. So can someone tell me what the specs are for the xvid codec or what the problems might be with playback?
ps. I can play all of divx3.11 no problem on the old box so please help me out - or it might be that time for me to buy a new video card.thnx
:)

You should be able to decode XviD o.k. on a PIII 600 MHz. Try downloading ffdshow from sourceforge and see if that helps.
I had a problem with my laptop in which DivX would work fine but XviD that I made would peak the processor to 100%. It's a 1 GHz with an ATI card. I finally tracked down the bug though, I had to disable 'YV12' from the 'supported output colorspaces' list in ffdshow to get it to work perfect now. I have the latest drivers for my ATI Mobility M4 but I guess the card doesn't decode YV12 well!
Anyway, if ffdshow doesn't work right away, try messing with the colorspaces a bit, - it worked for me.

I can play XviD 704x384/b-frames/AC3 fine on my Celeron 525 with Rage Fury Pro 32mb, so it's not the hardware.
ffdshow should help, and also try using Bsplayer as a media player. It seems to use a lot less CPU then some of the other players.
I use mplayer on Debian, so you could always try that if all else fails.

disable 'YV12' from the 'supported output colorspaces' - I don't see that in the properties. When I go to ffdshow filter properties, I have Supported codecs but yv12 isn't in there. How exactly do you disable that? Thanx for the replies. :)

Another thing you should check :
If your audio is 48 KHz sampling rate and your soundcard doesnt support this natively in hardware your CPU has to make a sampling rate conversion in real time on decoding, this is extra stress for the CPU in addition to XviD decoding.
I use BeSweet for my audio processing and will always downsample to 44.1 KHz ( using SSRC in 32 Bit FP precision, so its 'almost' lossless ) to overcome compatibility probs with older soundcards here ...

I don't believe it's the sound card problem because as I stated before I get same problem when I swap video cards. My main comp plays all codecs fine with no problems. But the older system just doesn't handle xvid at all. I get 100% cpu usage on the old system with the rage fury pro and it's either the card or something in the software.

_drivers_.
it's in the _drivers_.
Download the latest ones, post ati support a note that they stink big time and should move their lazy butts and code some proper drivers.
So long fetch yourself a ffdshow-alpha-build (find it on the sourceforge page).
Install it.
Then you'll find that YV12-property.
Enjoy,

thanx, I got it to work with bsplayer, 56-65% cpu usage, works fine :)
thanx again

I FULLY agree. I spent the last few days experiencing major crashes and BSODs on Win2k of all things. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out what the problem was. To make a long story short, I had upgraded to the new ATI Catalyst 2.5 drivers and that was the cause. Funny thing, games ran fine, but I suppose ATI does not want you compiling software or encoding videos..because then it causes a system crash. And unfortunately no matter how much you post support, they just don't learn their lesson.
Never ATI again...never.

dude ati drivers own. I have a ati radeon 8500, every single driver i've tried since cat 2.2 is fully stable, and just keeps getting better. :)
i'm on cat 2.5 right now, it works great, going to cat 3 this weekend
edit: i reformat my computer whenever changing video drivers to avoid conflict, maybe driver conflicts caused your problem...

I can play all divx or xvid videos on my Celeron 300 + Riva TNT 16mb.. no post processing, of course (or at least auto in ffdshow), but it plays fine;) and high resolutions too.
i'm pretty amazed of that though, because my friends have troubles playing videos, and they have way better cpus than mine..
oh, and guys, dont use nvidia's detonators 41.x - they cause flickering in wmp. 40.x works fine and are the recommended drivers so far;)
cheers!
