ffdshow Alpha or not?

I'm a litlle confused about ffdshow because I don't know which codec to install. Should I choose the Alpha version or not? Or can I install both, and if in which order should they be installed?

The alpha version has some more options (really, a lot more options). If you only want to decode use the stable (non-alpha), if you want to tweak the options to get the best of the filter, take a look at the alpha. If the alpha isn't stable simply install the stable version.

I encoded a clip with DivX 5.0.2 and a quantizer of 1. When tried playing it with ffdshow-20020617 I got flying blocks, as if the file was corrupted.
Using the 20021113 alpha release fixed it.

Question......... How exactly did you get Divx 5.02 to use a quantizer of 1 when the lowest it allows is 2. And more importantly...... why?

Doing a one-pass with the bitrate set to 10000kbps
Under Adv. Parameters tab I changed the Min. q to 1.

The reason I first did this was related to this

Whenever I capture directly in DivX, which is never (I hope). I set the q to 1 for the best picture.

the lastest alpha has greeny effect over time and b-frames are showed wierd.

I think this alpha may have some problems with handling XviD. I needed
it for playing divx so I installed it without the XviD handling module
(when installing don't choose the XviD module). XviD is handled by the
directshow viewer (Nic's) or the one in the codec itself. That way means
no problems with b-frames.
