Is it really faster?

Is XVID faster than DIVX 5.0.2? I used XVID 20122202 and it is 2 fps slower at the same clip. At the codecs shootout doom9 says it is faster.

Depends on the features you use. Since you use a development binary, you play around with unoptimized code.

Once it's satble code, it's going to be optimized, and then it's faster again.

Quite logical if you start to think about it, right?

Speed of XviD vs DivX5 is comparable. XviD maybe little (5-15%, no more) faster. For me is important quality and functionality (bugless), not speed.

Speed of encoding isn't all.

Computer consume cpu-time for

a) MPEG-2 (or MJPEG) decoding = cca 20%?
b) video mastering (resizing, filtering, etc.) = cca 30%?
c) encoding = cca 50%?

If encoding is twice faster (e.g.), you get only 25% speed up overall.

xvid is a about 65% of the speed of divx5 when using the advanced features

I think slower or faster is very depend on the features of the codec will be used. As the XviD is still in very heavy development I think
XviD maybe a little bit slower.

Because I only do encoding while I'm sleeping, so the slower is the
better as I could sleep longer ;) LoL

I think that XVID is really faster than DIVX 5.
My system is Athlon XP 1700+, 512 mb ddr, 30 GB + 60 GB hard disk ata 100, hauppage wintv go.
Using Divx I just can capture (352*288 25 fps + uncompressed audio) without any new feature (I use Quantizer=5, NO Psicho bframes qpel or gmc) for not skip frames; using lastest XVID I can do it using most of new features (Quantizer=5, with chroma motion, qpel and lumi masking).

On your machine you should really be able to capture in full resolution with DivX 5. Just make sure you switch Motion Search Precision to fastest.

I didn't say that I always use motion search precision ULTRA HIGH. My machine is quite slow due to incompatibilies from my Motherboard and my DDR so I must set safe settings (both BIOS and OS) so I can't run as fast as I wanted. Then my Hauppage board is not very nice. I keep all as it is untill next system upgrade so I change Motherboard, memory and Processor.

Encoding speed is fast, and I never capture realtime XVID, because I like edit my captures first.

O.K., I hate that crappy drivers from Hauppauge since the very first time I put it into my machine. Latest WDM drivers for WinXP still crash my machine and capturing is impossible as they are too slow. Using btwincap drivers from SF the machine runs completely stable and I can capture full PAL resolution to whatever I want (usually something like MJPEG). Incompatibilities in your system setup may kill all that :(

I just thought you capture to DivX or XviD directly, well my AthlonXP 1600+ can do that with DivX 5 (but setting Motion Search Precision to 'fastest'), guess XviD can do that as well, but I never tried. Happy christmas anyway.
