Interlace when resizing a captured video ???

Ok..I have posted this question before but I can't solve my Interlace problems. So here it is..

I am making a DVD-R and I am stuck at the menus. I used ATI AIW, VirtualdDub, Huffuv @ 720*480, PCM 48khz Stereo. And as we all know that capture videos looks interlace on our monitors, but it's fine after encode and play on TV. Here's my question. How come my encoded movie looks fine on TV, and my encoded menus looks "interlace" on TV.?? I use VirtualDub to cut out little clips and edit in VegasVideo. In VegasVideo I "render as" MPG using DVD template and in the advance option for Field Order I pick "Interlaced,bottom field first". I also tried "Interlace:top field" It still doesn't work. My video still have a little of interlacing. My second try was to "Render As" AVI in Vegas using Huffuv codec and encode it with TMPGenc. Still same thing. I tried all the settings in TMPG. Like int he settings ->Video tab ->Encode mode...I tried all three settings "Interlace, Non-Interlace, Inverse Pulldown". Nothing works !!... So can somebody give me some pointers on how to encode my edited videos in VegasVideo or how to encode my AVI from VegasVideo using TMPGenc. ?? Like the settings and encode mode and stuff. Thanks !!

P.S. I even try to cut out clips from my encoded Interlace MPG and edit in VegasVideo, and render as MPG from VegasVideo. I still get the interalce on my TV. Somehow I got it backward. It looks fine on my monitor but interlace on TV. I don't know why..so is there a way to reverse it ??

Do you vertically resize the video in order to make the menus? If yes, you have to deinterlace first, else you'll get the combing effect more or less, depending on the target resolution.

hmm...sorry I didn't get what u meant by "vertically resize"?? what's that means....Well all I did was just import my 20sec interlace clips into VegasVideo and then resize it..I just resize it into little squares..so what u mean by "vertically resize" ?

Well, if you resize it to "little squares", then you resize it horizontally and vertically. Because you resize vertically, you don't keep the 576 (PAL) or 480 (NTSC) vertical lines that are necessary to display the interlaced video correctly on TV.

De-interlace the video before you downsize it to small squares, and your problem will be gone.

Ok...thaks for the reply but how do you do it? Well I know I either de-interlace my 20sec avi in VirtualDub....or de-interlace my mpg. I have 2 choices of de-interlace which one do u suggest?

1. I can use VirtualDub and cut out a bunch of 20sec avi and use VirtualDub De-Interlace plug-in to de-interlace it???

2. Encode my huge AVI using TMPGEnc as Interlace and cut a bunch of 20sec clips still using TMPGEnc. From there I use all of the 20sec interlace mpg and encode it again using the "Deinterlace (Double)" in TMPGEnc ??? Should I use "Double" or something else ??

Well I used option 2 and it faild...my little squares are still interlace....

You are really missing the basics of video editing. What about reading some guides? There are a lot of very good ones here at doom9's site.

1. Always encode from your source (the big AVI), else you'll loose quality.
2. Use VirtualDub's mark-in and mark-out feature to select your desired 20sec clip.
3. Use the SmartDeinterlace filter (by Donald Graft) to convert to progressive video. Using an extra resize filter you can reach the desired "square size" in the same step.
4. Through "Save as AVI" you get your progressive clip, which you can add to your video editing software.
