I purchased some 4x disk and Nero shows them as 4x but when I burn they burn like 2x. Like almost 30 minutes to burn 4064megbytes. I have the Sony DRU-500A with 10f firmware. Is anyone else having this problem or am I just holding my beath the wrong way.

Any help would great

Thanks,
DL

Is DMA enabled? What kind of 4x dvd-r? What is the manufacturer code?

The DMA is set to Auto. The manufacture is Ritek and I purchased them on Ebay.

Ok, I understand the flaws in the manufacturing however, normally if I starting burning a "CD" and it says 24x and it is not writing it at that speed Nero comes back and says chaning writing speed to xxx or what ever speed it can write at. Is it different with DVD? Does Nero change speed and not tell you?
Thanks for the link on the tools I will check out the disk as well.

Use ADVDInfo to examine the disk. Look at the OE for RITEK..G3 or something similar. You can download it from a number of places. Here's one:

Generally, a DVD burner will read the header of the blank, compare it's code to the firmware and burn at the rated speed store in firmware. For example, recently an upgrade to the Pioneer burner allows Ritek..G3's to be burned at 2x speed. Before then, the max these would burn would be 1x, because the Pioneer's firmware had them listed as 1x capable.

In the case of a 4x burner, you'll be doing the same thing - comparing the manufacturers code with the firmware to determine the true/capable burning speed. If the firmware says it's 2x, it's 2x. Only way around it would be an upgraded or hacked firmware.

Look at the blanks you're using and figure out the true manufacturer ID's and post them.

I am having similar problems with the new firmware, but i'm burning CDs at 24x. They take about twice as long as they should... i personally think that this is a firmware issue... as i have no changed anything else since it started happenning. I know that my 2x Riteks work fine.

I am attempting to do just that. I am at work and only have a DVD-Rom and a writer. When I try and use advdinfo it get and error which reads "SPI command returned: Senekey 03h;ASC 57h; ASCQ 00h. Is this because no DVD writer or some other problem? Sorry to have so many questions.

DL, don't apologize about the number of questions. That's what this forum is about - to help people with questions.

As far as the error goes, yes, I believe you need to run the ADVDinfo with a blank in the burner, not a DVD-ROM drive. Could be wrong, but seem to remember that.

Caedel, I don't know if the same holds true for CDR burning (the firmware issue). Maybe someone else monitoring this thread does.

OK i will waint and see if someone else is following the thread. Thanks for the info.

Only DVD burners can read the manufacturer info (maybe a few dvd-roms can, but this would be unusual)

Ok guess that puts this on hold till I get home. Thanks all for the help.

OK I have used advdinfo and the 4x media says Ritek G04. So now I am really confused. I test burning two more and the last one was 2.54gig and took 20 minutes. Are these correct numbers for a 4x writer? I thought they sounded like 2x.
