Stripped all content, film just slightly to big to fit on a DVD 5? Method.

Happened to me film was just 137mb to big and I did'nt want to recompress the entire film which usually takes between 16-20Hrs on my system. Using this method it just took around 3 hrs.

1) Run dvd2avi on selected vob ( last vob compresses will due to black screen on credits ) to create a d2v file.

2) Take dvi project and compress the video to create a compressed m2v.

3) copy the original vob file you have compressed into a separate directory and rename it to vobname_1_01.vob ( The first vob filename )

4) now use Ifoedit and create IFO function this will create a DVD playable set of files just for this vob
now remux your m2v file into this vob file generated in step (2).

5) you now have a smaller vob file.

6) now rename the vob back top its original name.

7) copy vob file from the separate directory back into the directory that contains the all the other vob files.

8) now proceed as normally when striping content etc. You need to force a Navigation Pack update. Get Vts Sectors etc.

9) If all goes well you now have a set of files that will fit on a DVD-5 without compressing the entire film from scratch as well as the subtitles, chapter points etc etc.

great idea, works great!
i had the case where my project was about 300MByte to big and my last VOB only 500MB. so i didn't want to compress this vob with such a low ratio (approx. 40%) so i tried this method with 2 vob-files.

i took the last two vob's and renamed them as drafty mentioned and now i had about 1500MB to reduce by 300MByte which gave me a compressionrate of approx. 80% and therefore a much better quality.
i opend the vob's directly from rempeg2 V1.5.2 without going via dvd2avi.

the only problem i had afterwards was a file-reallocation error in nero when i tried to burn it on a DVD+R. there is no problem with my Pioneer DVD standalone-player but i'm still curios why this happens.

does anyone know if this is the same problem as discussed in the forum? Has it something to do with encoding directly from the vob-files witout converting with dvd2avi? :confused:

any help is appreciated.

I think the reallocatoin error comes from your vob sizes. the last 2 vobs are off course no longer 0.99 gb (standard vob size).

I always fix this with ifo edit. Select the ifo necessary and choose vob tools.

check rebuild pts and remove vob id.
when you get to the vob id choice to keep simply keep all id's you see. Ifoedit then makes a complete set of vob's with the right size and everything still works.

I think the above method will probably solve your problem. I too use this method once im finished transcoding. You can get relocation problems also with DVDs that have had bits removed from there menu structure. If you use imgtool 0.89 however this does not check the ifo files and then you just burn.

oh btw I can't recommend using nero for burning dvd's. Also when I first started out I tried compressing the vob files directly this resulted in sync problems once remuxed. I can't say for sure this was solely the result of compressing directly because I had ifoedit tmpgenc template issue's at the time.
