View Full Version : 352x240 (XVCD or XSVCD) problems.

Hi there.

I have tried several times to create an XVCD or an XSVCD at 352x240 to play in my Pioneer DV-C505 DVD changer (basically a 5 disc version of the DV-353). I have been unable to get any of the resulting files to play properly (skipping and freezing). This is definitely not a bitrate issue as I have tried with several bitrates from 3000 on down to below 2000 and this player is supposed to play these at up to 3000. I have read of some problems with BBMPEG and Mux rate etc... but have not had any success remuxing.

Has anyone had success making 352x240 XVCD's or XSVCD's with DVD2SVCD? If so, what am I missing? What's the secret?

Any help would be appreciated.

Well i found a ton of threads by doing a search, here is one
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=29394&highlight=dvd2svcd+xvcd Plus a whole lot of others that deal with similar topics.

Since i dont do xvcd or xsvcd, i can only add a few things one of them is check your vob files make sure they have no errors, also you could check to see if the final cue/bin file shows any errors. And make sure you do the full proof burning which using "deamon tools" and nero together.

Hi chainsaw135,

Thanks for the thread link. Unfortunately, it doesn't really say much about fixing my problem. And my problem is not bitrate related.

"check your vob files make sure they have no errors"

No errors in the vobs. I am able to make VCD's, SVCD's and CVD's without a hitch.

"check to see if the final cue/bin file shows any errors"

The images are fine. It's definitely a stream issue.

"make sure you do the full proof burning which using "deamon tools" and nero together"

I do all of my burning with VCDEasy and have no problems with VCD, SVCD or CVD. I sometimes use VCDImager, also without a hitch.

Everything I have read suggests this is related to BBMPEG and mux rate. Unfortunately, setting mux rate to 0 (auto) does not work and using a higher mux rate does not solve the problem (lots of errors from BBMPEG as it is muxing). I have tried remuxing the mpegs manually several times and all I get is errors.

If you are using Mpeg-2 then 0/automatic should work.
If you are using Mpeg-1 then 0/Automatic will not work.

Have you played the BBmpeg_muxed_file??.mpg in WinDVD or PowerDVD and does it happen their too?

Which are you using and a log file might help?

try this:

save this script as your dvd2svcd.ini ,
open dvd2svcd (110b1c)and

correct the address of the filters,dlls,exes,...etc.

atention:don't encode with cce,use tmpgenc (2.58 or 2.59).

this is for kvcds (Kwag),i get 180 minuts(more or less)in 800mb
for me is exelent! works perfect.
if you have some problem, post here please.

jorel,

I am not really interested in the KVCD LBR template. I am sure it is Ok, but I doubt that the LBR template can compare to a good 2 or 3 cd encode. What I really would like to know is how I can fix things using my current setup. I have tried encoding using both CCE and TMPG with the same result.

markrb,

I use Videolan to play my MPEG2 files. The resulting 352x240 MPEG2 I just created plays fine in it but not on my Pioneer standalone. Here is the log file (I only ripped one small chapter to test):

As you can see, my video bitrate is 2200, my audio bitrate is 224 adding up to less than what this player supports. I did not downsample the audio. I have tried it both ways with no difference in the players ability to play this stream. But this player supports 48 anyhow.

@ SatoriGFX:
i "think" you are searching this:

"Has anyone had success making 352x240 XVCD's or XSVCD's with DVD2SVCD? If so, what am I missing?"

sorry!;)

Linux
20th December 2002, 13:28
On many player it is not possible to make an XSVCD with vcd resolution, so you have to stick to XVCD if you want 352x240.

Have you selected MPEG1?
One way of getting the most parameter right is to load the preset vcd-template in dvd2svcd and then change bitrate to what you want.

Another problem can be if you have tried VBR.

MPEG1 have only support for CBR.

The only changes I can see that "might" fix things are a couple of settings on the BBMPEG advanced settings page. Setting it to "VBR" and using 0 for mux rate (I thought auto didn't work on MPEG1?). I will try changing those with my current setup and see what happens.

jorel,

I made the changes to the BBMPEG advanced settings page (setting vbr and using 0 for mux rate) and the resulting XVCD worked. So, thanks for your .ini file even though I did not end up using all of it.

Now I just need to get 352x240 XSVCD's working. Back to work.

:)

Now that is one on me. I have never been able to get auto to work in BBmpeg using Mpeg-1. When I return from my trip I must try this again.

I was leaning toward what Linux said until I read the last two posts. Glad to hear you got it working.

oh,
just post the solution once you hit it. I get terribly inflated muxed files when I set it on zero.

Ok, so I am able to make XVCD's and XSVCD's if I encode using TMPG (using the BBMPEG settings mentioned above). But with CCE I end up with video that just does not play correctly. The video plays but it "looks" like it is missing frames (just looks that way I am sure).

So, the question becomes, what is different when encoding using CCE that would cause this? I would really like to use CCE for 352x240 XSVCD's if at all possible.

cce "don't like" low bitrates...
tmpgen is better for low,cce for high.
do a "search" about this and you get some answers.
ps:
with the template that i post,
use maxbitrate=2300 for very high action movies,
from normal films you can use maxbitrate=1150 or 1500!
bye
;) :) :)

The thing is, I tried making a 352x240 XSVCD using CCE and a higher bitrate (2750 for video and 224 for audio) and had the same problems. The same bitrates and TMPG work like a charm.

Thanks.

I don't know if anyone still care about this topic since it is pretty old. But since at got a lot of good advice from this forum, I just wanted to give something back:cool:

If you want to make svcd using CCE in DVD2SVCD with vcd resolution, then this is how you do it:

The problem is that BBMPEG doesn't allow muxing in svcd mode if the video file is not in svcd standard resolution OR CCE doesn't include headers that are required by BBMPEG to mux SVCD. Either ways, I don't know. But I know how to fix the problem. You have to use MPEG Tools of TMPGEnc to fool BBMPEG.

In MPEG Tools, select Simple Multiplex, select MPEG-2 Super VideoCD (VBR).

For Video Input, select the video file that CCE produced (.mpv). Press run to add the svcd header required by BBMPEG. You should have a .mpg from this operation.

In MPEG Tools, select De-multiplex. In input, select the .mpg file obtained earlier. Click on the video stream to demux. You should have a .m2v file from this step.

Replace the original .mpv file with this .m2v file. Go to DVD2SVCD and do a recover operation on muxing and cutting. BBMPEG should not complain and you will have your image files :D :D

I find that making svcd at vcd resolution produces better video quality than at standard svcd resolution when the original video is 4:3 (i.e. music videos) and doesn't have the black bar on top and bottom. The compatibility with hardware DVD player is high too, because vcd resolution mpeg-2 is DVD standard resolution.

Hope this help....

trekkertrekker,
welcome in forum and thanks for this informations!
:)

i understand why and how you did it,
only to remove doubts:
352x240 mpeg1 is dvd standard! (audio 48k)

and you wrote:
"I find that making svcd at vcd resolution..."
where do you change the "resolutions"?
i read changes in the file type, not in the resolutions!

When I say VCD resolutions I refer to 352x240(NTSC) or 352x288(PAL)

This guide is to help those people who want to use DVD2SVCD and CCE to make SVCD but don't want its default resolution of 480x480 NTSC or 480x576 (PAL). Instead they want VCD resolutions.

In DVD2SVCD you can specify what video resolution (frame size) you want.

oh yes,i know that you can choose in d2s,
i didn't see it in the post...cos you wrote:
"I find that making svcd at vcd resolution.."
and changing the resolution of the svcd you don't get svcd no more,
and i see more mistakes...but is clear...thanks!

Right. Maybe I should have called it xsvcd:o. Anyways, you don't really break the svcd standard much. All of my friends' dvd players can play these kind of discs without any problem. After all mpeg-2 at 352x240(NTSC) or 352x288(PAL) is also DVD standard resolutions.

Using the latest version DVD2SVCD, I used that same SVCD settings as always and just changed resolution to 352x240 MPEG-II and everything worked ok with CCE. To do MPEG-I, I had to make sure that I enode at 29.97 fps
