Need help with S-Video

New to capturing so I need some help.

I have a Asus V8200 TI500 Deluxe with video IN. Now I want to be able to capture using S-Video and NOT composite. So I hooked up an S-Video cable from scart on my vcr and into my Video IN on my graphics card but I only get black and white picture when I tell virtualdub to use S-Video in as source. However when I set source as composite I get picture.

Could it be that a video/tv and so on does NOT output S-Video ? And if so how do I know if they do or not ?

is your vcr a svhs vcr ? otherwise its unlikely that it supports s-video out trough scart. you will only get a b&w picture. :(

It is a six years old sony stereo video so I guess it does not support it. I guess my question is how do I know if my tv/vcr/digital sat reciever and so on supports it ?

Will I have to try all of them and see or can I get this info from a manual ? Does for instance my Nokia digital sat reciever have s-video out through the scart connectors on it ?

If you have an S-VHS vcr it will support s-video out. I've only come across one standard VHS machine that provided this functionality. If your vcr supports it your manual should say so.
Nokia's sat boxes only support RGB and composite out unfortunately. Humax on the other hand is one manufacturer (that comes to mind) that does support s-video out.

In my experience this is not true for *all* Nokia receivers. My 2-year old Nokia 9310S (digital sat. receiver) gives me a nice S-video signal. The other day I tested a Nokia MediaMaster 9780 (digital sat. receiver), which I believe is about the same age as mine, and it did not have S-video out. So I think it depends. Some Nokia models support S-video out, some don't.

You're most certainly right. My knowledge about Nokia recievers only covers the 95xx, 96xx and 98xx-models. It's good to hear that even Nokia has learned how to make their machines a little better ;-)

Well, if you have a nokia 95xx or 96xx with a scsi port, you shouldn't bother doing any analogue captures at all. Just buy an el cheapo scsi adapter and copy the pure mpeg2 stream to hdd. No quality loss whatsoever.


BTW, nokia 9600 is the best receiver ever, no other receiver can surpass it in software suport, hardware features. Yet!

First all, you MUST install on your nokia DVB 2000, which replaces completely the original nokia software : tutorial (http://www.jrainer.demon.co.uk/9600/9600.html)

Download dvb2000 from here (http://drhans.jinak.cz/html/dig_dvb2000.htm), I highly recommend to use the official ones; there are some great patches for "extended viewing" :D, use them if you know what you're doing (nomanit is kinda nice). DVB2000 works with nokia 9200, 9500, 9600. It doesn't work with 9800 or other recievers.

Here (http://www.no-access.de/en/en_hardware.html) is a list of compatible SCSI adapters.

Use vgrabber (http://home.tiscali.cz/cz292254/dvb2000_tools/vgrabber078.zip) or dvbrecorder (http://home.tiscali.cz:8080/drdl3/dvbrecorder-v119b.zip) in order to record the mpeg stream

There are hundreds of 3rd party apps for nokias, so you might have to do a little research.
