I just got done ripping GOLDMEMBER and changed the CD SIZE under BITRATE to 780 FOR ALL of them. What it did was create 3 disc's but the weird part is it made 2 of them 805Mb and the 3rd one only 7Kb..?? I selected:
Video Encoding Mode: Multipass VBR
Min. bitrate: 300
Max. bitrate: 2530
Avg. Bitrate: 2113

Since the Avg. Bitrate: 2113 WHY didn't it make 2 disc's at a SLIGHTLY better BITRATE instead of making 2 @ 2113 and a 3rd disc that was 8Kb that way i dont have to change the 3rd disc just to watch 5 sec of video??

Since the Avg. Bitrate: 2113 WHY didn't it make 2 disc's at a SLIGHTLY better BITRATE instead of making 2 @ 2113 and a 3rd disc that was 8Kb that way i dont have to change the 3rd disc just to watch 5 sec of video??

If you selected 2113 as the max average bitrate, then thats what you got! Else you need to tell us, what settings you used in the bitrate tab for max average.

I had also reported that reducing the CD size below the specified values did cause oversized mpgs. Perhaps this problem falls into the same category?

Hello!

Just as ux-3 wrote: Do you mean that you have selected 2113 as Max Average bitrate?

BTW: it cannot be that you got two images of 805 Mb.
Out of your log i see that your

- 1. image is 784.64 Mb
- 2. image is 784.59 Mb
- 3. image is 2.58 Mb.

This makes me quite sure, that the max average is your problem. You would have to raise it to a bitrate of about 3200 for your 95 min. movie with 3 discs of 780, but thats much to high and then you donīt need to do a 4-pass encode, but a CBR instead. I tell you that two discs of 780 Mb are enough for this movie - length.
Overmore you should definately raise your audio - bitrate to a min. of 192 or at least 160 kbps.

greets, winxi

You are also using an old version. You should really upgrade.

I am a bit confused. Were you trying to make 3 cd's or were you trying to make 2 and it made 3?

It is doubtful you would have gotten 3 full size unless you drastically raised the Max AVG setting. This is a limator and will not allow DVD2SVCD to raise the AVG bitrate beyond this.

To make a full 3 disc encode out of this movie you would need to raise the bitrate well above the SVCD spec. There just isn't enough movie to make 3 discs under normal SVCD bitrates.

First off, The Max Avg. Bitrate was set to 2230 so there was some room to increase it JUST ENOUGH to NOT make that 3rd disc I would think. The image size of 805 was noted under EXPLORE. I see where you got the 785Mb by subtracting what was used during the - Creating CD-Images using VCDXBuild step. I wasn't TRYING to make 2 or 3 SPECIFICALLY I thought the program AUTOMATICALLY adjusted how many CD's it took according to the BITRATE/CD Size meaning it would attempt to use the HIGHEST BITRATE possible within the limits you set under CD Size.

THANKS for all your reply's this is a GREAT learning process ....

You tell it how many cd's to use on the bitrate tab. What DVD2SVCD does is from that info you have provided it decides on the bitrate.

So figure out how long you movie is and then find the place on the bitrate tab that movie belongs. In that section you will have the cd setting where there will be a number 1,2,3 etc... This is the number of cd's you are telling DVD2SVCD to try and use.

For instance using the defaults if your movie is 98 minutes long it will use the info found on the line that reads:

Between 76 and 100 Mins Use 2 cd's of 800mb's each.

I think what is happening is that you have that set to 2 cd's, but by altering the CD size something screwy happened. You should probably put the cd size back to 800 and try again.

I myself do 99% of movies using 2 700mb cdr's only movies over 2 1/2 hours do i add a 3rd cd. Now for me it looks great, yeah my eye's might not see all the little things some others do, and thats a preference i think we all learn over time. I do some changes which i've noted before but i'll post them here not sure if that will be to your liking as it is for me but here goes.
=====================================================================
First thing i do is run bitrate viewer to check the field order mostly. Then i change it to what ever the field order is in bitrate viewer.
=====================================================================
Bitrate tab.. i change all the "Use" Boxes to reflect 2 cd's, and all the cd sizes to 800. I change the min to "755" everything else under bitrate tab is default.

FrameServer tab.. You can pretty much do alot in here but i leave it mostly default as i like the look of it, adding filters we found out in the past will cause more noise, and degrade the quality in most cases so its not worth the trouble. You might how ever use some filters like temporal smoother and others if you do have alot of noise, but that is not the case for people ripping dvd's mostly that would be for avi's and such.

Audio tab.. I uncheck downsampling because its a waist of time for me and if you have a newer dvd player then its a waist of time for you also:) I Sometimes change the audio bitrate of the movie from 192/224 depending on what type of movie it is, to be even clearer if it's a movie with alot of music in it that i like i would up the audio from 192 to 224..output mode i leave to Stereo.

Dvd2avi tab.. I have an ApexAD 5131 dvd player and it plays movies a bit darker then i like or even the standard would call for. So i change my Lum gain(contrast) from 0 to 20 and the lum.offset(bright) from 0 to 13. I Mostly leave the Ntsc Field on automatic unless i run in to a problem but thats only happend a few times in over a year i've been doing this.

bbMpeg.. Cd Overlap seconds i change to 5 , but you'll find that some people dont change it from the default and others do, its preference so do some testing i think you'll be happy when you finish your findings that you found what works best for you. offset seconds i leave default. There are some advanced settings you can mess with also but i almost never do and only when i have a problem or if i'm not doing a dvd ripp would i mess with the advanced settings in bbmpeg tab.

CD image tab.. the only few changes i make here is uncheck "Title Picture" "ChangeCd pic" "Include Movie infor on cd" "Include XML on cd" all other settings i leave default and yes i use VCDXBuild to make my images.

Encoder tab.. I do a few changes here i change the number of passes to 5 and also the image equal. Priority to 24, sometimes i'll adjust it from 24 to 20 or 22 ect.. but nothing major really. I change the field order like i said above to what ever bitrate viewer stated, also in advanced i de-select linear quantizer scale.

I know you didn't ask for such detailed info but i figured since your in the mood to learn i'd give you some info:)

One more thing i'd like to note these settings work awsome for me with NTSC Format.IMO

When you try out for 780 MB CD's you will get these filesized, don't worry, if you put the mpg file in a VCD authoring program you will see that it will fit on a 780 MB cd.

Explanation in short:

803/1.024=784

Bits and Bytes who knows the difference.....;)

Thanks for the REPLY but what i need answered is WHY did it make the 3rd disc of 7Kb instead of just lowering the other 2 disc's AVG bitrate and use ONLY 2 disc's instead>>??

I can say that your using an older version, so upgrade that first then go back in to the bitrate tab and change all the cd's sizes to 800 if your using 700mb cdr's.

First try, if it works if you stay to specs (800MB for a "run of the mill" disk)

If it works then, retry the alternate settings you had. I did encounter several times the event, that my Mpg was growing a little over the specified size, so there might be a problem at some stage.

To Chainsaw: I am doing things that way too, but recently I could see such a disk on a somewhat larger TV set (not the regular 70 cm diagonal type - 28 inches I guess). Not convincing.

I have lately started to use 99 Minute CD-R, but I will convert to DVD as soon as I see a Sony or Nec Multiburner in a shelf...

Takes too much time to redo in a few years when we all just unfold the plasma screen and stick it on the wall...

chainsaw135
21st December 2002, 23:50
Ux-3 yeah i think with larger tv sets you should try to get the most of your bitrate as you can with using 99 minute cdr's and also using 3 of them. I use a 32" tv which is pretty average and with that size how i'm doing it now looks real good. The larger screens you'll start to notice more of the imperfections. I still have 50 more 80 minute cdr's before i can start on the 99 minute ones. Which in the past when the 99 minute cdr's first came down in price and were something to check out markrb and i talked a little about that in a thread and it did improve quality as you could of course up your bitrate a bit:)
And i'm all setup for overburning also since i own two lite-on burners and a 3 disk dvd player i'm just waiting for the 80 minute cdr's to run out:) I feel that the next stage also is going to be dvd-r burning and when the speed of the dvd-r's pick up a bit i'll grab one, i feel 4x is still a bit slow i'm looking for 12x or something in that department

Well this time I had what i'd consider 95% success. The SVCD completed BUT when I went to NERO to burn the 2 CD's this is what i got on the First CD which was 826,683Kb under Explorer:

OVERBURN WRITING:
Sorry, this compilation contains too much data to fit on the CD with respect to the normal CD capacity. Do you want to try overburn writing at your own risk (this might cause read errors at the end of the CD or might even damage yor recorder)?

I've updated to DVD2SVCD 1.1.0 BUILD 1C. Under Executing Cinema Craft Encoder it says a few things Im unclear about.
#1 - Number of CDs: 2 Yet it made 3
#2 - Avg. Bitrate: 1965 Yet the Max. Avg. is set for 2230
