Hello!
I have a notebook (Dell I8100) with internal DVD drive and firewire port. OS is Windows XP home edition. Normally I use the internal DVD drive for ripping DVDs, I have ASPI installed (Adaptec 4.6), and there are no problems with SmartRipper or DVD Decrypter.
Now I've purchased an external firewire case (noname) and the LG GCC-4320b Combo drive, with PowerDVD 4.0 XP and Nero 5.5.xxx. I have no problems in watching DVDs nor in burning CDs.
But there are problems with DVD ripping. I got no ASPI access to the Combo Drive, although I tried to install Adaptec 4.72a and the LSI ASPI layer with the registry hack for external drives. This wouldn't be a problem, because I was able to start ripping with with vStrip (after authentification, both with DVD player and authDVD) and DVD Decrypter. Problem is, the ripping process just stops somewhere (it is really random!! i tried for several times with both rippers, and it stops in all cases at different positions). There are no read errors, the drive (or the firewire-to-ide bridge) just stops, and disconnects from the computer. There is an orange LED on the case, which is on in READ mode, this LED is normally on when I read something from the drive, but when the drive disconnects, it is OFF. I'm not sure whant happens first, the disconnection or the LED OFF. But it is possible to rip a whole DVD, I was able to do it once, in about 30 tries. Furthermore, I was able to copy all vob files to the HDD using the Explorer (after authentification).
Questions:
Is it possible to use ASPI for accessing the external Drive?
Could it be that the hardware (firewire-to-ide bridge) is broken?
Are there any known incompatibilities with the combo drive?
Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.
