When authoring a DVD, I've read that if you just keep the Dolby 5.1 track, it will play fine on non-Surround home systems. Now, does anyone know if a DTS-only track DVD will play in non-Surround/DTS home systems? Thanks.

I think all DVD Players have a ac3 decoder built in. That's why they can convert the 5.1 signal into stereo or prologic. Some have the six channels to connect via cinch on their backside. Most of them only have a stereo cinch connector.

I don't know of any DVD player that has a DTS decoder built in. Normally , DVD players with DTS logo on top can send the DTS stream via digital out to a decoder, but cannot decode DTS by themselfs. So I would say, that using a DTS only track is only advisable if you have a DTS capable home surround system.

Mvb is correct, though I have heard that if the dvd player can decode DTS ( usually the all-in-one jobby ) then under the little DTS logo on the front of the player it'll say "surround" rather than "digital" or "digital out".
