this conversation started under a different heading & i received some quite informative feedback

but i started it under a new heading (i hope this is ok) to see if i could attract more opinions because the old thread started with an audio bitrate question

when converting a divx 700mb file to svcd in DVD2SVCD i have tried using svcd, vcd & cvd resolution...all encodes have been 4 pass vbr with cce encoder with the resulting image being 800mb (i also used 12 as image quality priority) & 2 as anti noise filter

i have found vcd to be quite smooth, svcd to be sharper but more pixelated & cvd to be somewhere between the two

i would very much appreciate more feedback and peoples opinions on their more successful efforts

thanks people

increase image quality priority to 25 and try again.

PS: ...and edit your title

I have been playing with filters lately.
I agree that VCD can be too blurry so I use the Sharpen2 filter at a high setting of .5 or .6 and a huge amount of CCE anti-noise of 22. I have been using only mpeg-2 at 352 x 240. So far it's the best I have come across. It far outperforms the SVCD resolution of 480 x 480. I plan to test some with TS as well as the Sharpen2 to see if it looks better.

I tried using Unfilter, but it just didn't seem to work well with the AVI source.
I am also planning on trying Warpsharp if I can figure out the syntax.

BTW Sharpen2 works the same as Sharpen just much faster. It's not built into Avisynth so you will need the filter dll. Can be found using the Avisynth forum.

Biggest problems are Divx videos are fairly noisy and whenever you add filters you tend to add noise or make noise more noticable. This is the reason for the high CCE filter and my willingness to try TS.

This might be more of an advanced topic, but for now I will leave it were it is.

OK

ive done a few tests now & have decided that svcd definately looks better to me - however ive not played with TS or sharpen yet

im just finding that too much of the horizontal resolution is lost when encoding to vcd size so all the sharpness is lost and the qulity seems no better.

i have found an increase in quality when changing the image quality priority to 25 so thanks to ux-3 for that

i do intend to do further tests with the filters & will post my findings

please let me know if you find out anything further or have better results with the filters

What is the trade off?

Regarding a temporal filter I would recomend fluxsmooth and it's quite speedy, thread: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=38296

You can check a way to use it with dvd2svcd at the advanced section in the database scripts.

Read the CCE manual or try a search on Image Quality Priority. It's been discussed here, but mostly just rehashing the CCE manual.

Hi mark.
Ok, thanks.
The reason I asked here is ux-3 had responsed in such conviction that I thought he could enlighten me in that matter. I've read the manual but it's not so clear to me yet because, those settings depend on the source, the space you are aiming to encode, etc.

I will search the forum however.

Happy holydays and a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year :)
