View Full Version : Does anyone here use DVD Movie Copy ?

I purchased some software from PC WORLD (UK company) called DVD Movie Copy. Now I am totally confused though because I go to their website (Steinberg) and there is only a small mention of it, no support, updates or anything. Then I find out Steinberg is just the reseller and it is actually VOB who created it. So I go to their website, and there isn't even any mention of it, very odd. So I am guessing it is re-badged and is actually there InstantVideo software or something.

So anyway, my question is, does anyone use either DVD Movie Copy or InstantVideo, if so can you tell me how to make the entire DVD9 disc get squeezed on to a DVD5 by recompression ? At the moment I can only select 1 title per DVD, like either the movie, or 1 of the extras. The whole idea though of the software is to recompress data so it fits on to a DVD-R. Yet it only allows you to select 1 title, almost making the whole point of the software pointless, as most core movies fall in the 4.2gb area anyway. So, my guessing is that either it only allows you 1 title on purpose, so that no menus or next track options are used, thus leaving you with a 1 track video, or there is an option I am missing somewhere to allow you to recompress the entire DVD (which surely is easily possible, even if it does degrade quality and takes a while).

I did try to access both websites for support, but couldn't see any help for my software. So thought I would ask the top bods here if they can help :)

If anyone knows of any 1 click solution shrinking software, then please let me know, I don't care about long encoding times as they are inevitable.

Also what is the best VOB to MPEG convertor ? I use HERO but for some reason every MPEG ends up corrupt.

Cheers all.

DVD Movie Copy is a joke, one of which we only mention on occasions like this. It only does one track, like you said. No chance for a full DVD. If you want complete DVDr, learn from the guides on doom9, like the rest of us did.

Those programs are a joke. Don't expect anyone (anyone with any experience at least) to give you any assitance with them. You might want to contact the manufacturer or learn the proper way of backing up DVD's.

Well. I do actually know how to back up the "proper" way with all the DVD tools from ifo edit, DVDx, Decrypter, Smart Ripper, FlaskMPEG, etc etc, but you can't blame me for wanting to cut the crap and just get a 1 click solution. If a company did actually create a 1 click item of software, with loads of settings, then I am sure it would be perfectly acceptable to use, and not just mickey mouse because it is a commerical item of software. I do agree though, that at the moment, it does seem there is nothing decent in the "1 program does all" genre.

All they are doing is ripping people off by repackaging the same stuff you can find here for free.

Holy Crap! DVDx? FlaskMpeg? No wonder you're looking for an all-in-one tool. You're in the dark ages when it comes to dvd9->dvd5!

Eyes only, hang on there a sec. At the start I was critiscised for using a new item of software that does things all in one, then I am also cristisced for using multiple freeware software to do it. So, you tell me, what software do you use for DVD 9 to DVD 5 (if the vobs are greater then 4.7gb) ? See below for all the software I use, if I have anything decent out of that lot, then tell me and I will use it.

I use a method basically like http://www.trilight.com/multipgc

Sorry, didn't mean to be criticizing, we just get really sick of the lazy sloths that come this way looking for the all-in-one quick fix. I'm not saying you're not on the right track with your utilities, I'm just saying some of the utils you mentioned were extremely outdated, showing that you either 1) are looking for an all-in-one because of a cumbersome current procedure or 2) aren't really "in-the-know" about dvdr and just took that list off of some site.

Now, I'm going to assume #1 is more likely the case after seeing your 'arsenal'. You do have the tools to do the job, you just need to get a little more current, as some of the tools you described would definitely not lead you to a great copy of a dvd like the above URL will produce.

By the way, since this forum doesn't endorse warez, I'm going to assume you are really rich since you own a lot of really expensive utilities. One more you should purchase is Scenarist. :D

You were not criticized, Jon. It is the software and perhaps the method you are using that is being criticized. Don't take things too personally. If you want to know how to do a good backup, follow one of these two guides:

Thanks for the help guys, and sorry if I sounded like I was a victim :) It is just that I have a lot of DVDs to backup, and the less time it takes, the better, I guess I just feel ALL software we use is in the dark ages, and I am eager for a simple solution that does everything in one go, I don't think it is due to being lazy, it is just being practical and for ease of use. If you have 10 plus DVDs to backup in quick time, then 1 item of software would make things very convenient.

Thanks for showing me the guide, I will give it a go. As for warez, well, that would be telling :) Oh, how about demo versions of the software ? No way of telling, hehe.

I am not the expert in this "business" but when I hear someone wants to have "all-in-one" that is also cheap and gives the best output it seems to me it is like talking about Utopia of Plato. It is a little bit out of topic but I the same goes with the area I am a little bit more aware - diving. It is impossible to have ultra light and at the same time very durable equipment. It is also impossiblke to do deep diving and use the same equipment as for shallow once. In general it is virtually impossible to maximize all factors that work against each other.

Sorry for this crap philosophy.

OMS, I don't believe I ever said "cheap". I would pay $200 if the software was decent enough. I only bought DVD Movie Copy because it was one of the only all in ones I could find, it was cheap, but that isn't my fault :) I also purchased DVD X Copy, that was around $80, but sadly only splits the disc and doesn't use recompressing. I do a lot of DVD work, I am not your usual "I wouldn't mind a copy of this so I will back it up" type person, I do multiple DVDs, so hopefully you can understand why time is important.

If I did mention cheap, then I apologise, I but I don't think I did. All in one, yes, cheap, not especially :)

OMS Diver
18th December 2002, 21:46
In fact you did not say cheap but I use it in order to make a general assumption about expecting too many things into one piece. On the other hand I did not ever said you are not experienced. If by any means I have somehow insulted you I apologize, it was not my intention.

No, you haven't insulted me :) I guess I should use more smileys and so on to show I am writing in a "happy" mood, haha, as you are not the first to think such things.

As for expecting too much, I don't really see why, as you know there is about 4 items of software that you need to use to get a decent backup done of a DVD. I just don't see why combining these in to 1 is so hard. Maybe it is, as I am no programmer, but the software is out there already, so there must be some smart programmers out there who can combine them :)

I wait with great anticipation for the first inventor to create a way to vacuum 2 DVDs together after burning for a dual layer disc, it must be possible, you just need the right tools. What a great day that would be :)

I just tried out DVDXCopy and I'm pretty impressed.
It appears to do everything without much user intervention...a total idiot could backup a dvd now

atreides93, that is my point exactly, commerical software isn't always a bad thing, I understand it has stigma attached because it isn't "cool" or technical enough, but one day soon a excellent piece of software will be written that does all your need. DVDxCopy is very much the same as DVD-Cloner, both of which I own, but what I ideally would like is software like that, but which compresses the entire DVD on to 1 disc, sure it will be SVCD quality and not DVD, but it will be all on 1. At the moment DVDxCopy and DVD-Cloner only allow you to split discs, but it does keep the entire menu and special features and same quality (so your DVDs are created in less then a hour due to no compression needed).

atreides93
19th December 2002, 18:03
Agreed! that WOULD be a cool feature!!!

Right now I do it manually by re-encoding the entire movie using dvd2avi, AviSynth and then CCE 2.5

the results are amazing though, i think its a lot better than SVCD, i can barely tell the difference between the original. i even watche dit on a 60 inch tv and had trouble telling the difference. I think CCE does an amazing job encoding at lower bit rates like 2.5 or 3 mbps

I have 1 question......

Why do people hire or by a DVD and recrompress the disc so they end up with a DVD wich contains less quality as the original DVD.

Sorry but i don't see the logic in this espacially the price of DVDmedia is getting cheaper by the week.....

Count the power the PC's needs to do the recmpressing.....

And don't come up with i don't see any difference.....i've done all this and still see 'very' clearly the difference between a orig.DVD (splitted one) or a recrompressed one.....

In advance I DO NOT attack anyone i just wanna know why .......

Right, lets clear a few things up. When I said SVCD is the same as DVD-R, if you had read what I wrote and in the context I wrote it, I said when an entire DVD9 is compressed on to DVD-R it would have a similar "quality" to SVCD. If you shrink 9gb on to 4gb I am sure the quality would be nearer SVCD quality then DVD. I am not talking about 6mbps video here, you would not be able to fit 2.5 to 3 hours of 6mbps footage on to a DVD-R.

Secondly, to even wonder why people would buy a DVD to then want to shrink it down to 1 DVD-R seems a little silly, especially as everyman and their dog used to shrink DVD down to fit on to 2 VCDs in crappy VHS quality, people are still doing it today. The main reason totally depends on what you do with the DVDs, keep them as backups, sell them, give them to friends, etc etc. If I had the choice of what type of copy I would like, then I would much prefer to watch a lesser quality copy of a DVD on 1 disc, then I would a perfect quality copy on 2 discs, UNLESS the bonus footage was put on 1 disc and the main movie on the other. If you have to watch half the movie on one disc and the rest on the other, then that is certainly not my thing. Remember also, we don't all have 40 inch widescreen TVs with Dolby 5.1 etc etc, some of us have bog standard 20 inch and less TVs with normal stereo and a $100 DVD player. Perfectly adequate for general viewing, so such people don't need major quality and Superbit, SVCD type quality would be acceptable for a copy.

Each to their own though.

Your methods must not be the tried-and-true ones we use. I've brought my backups over to people's houses with 50" flatscreen TVs and they thought the DVD was the original until i told them otherwise.

I guess if you don't know what you're doing, splitting is the way to go. Trying to argue about the 1-disc method to anyone who DOES know what they're doing isn't tho.

Wasn't taken personally by any means. But you have to realize that many ppl who will read this thread (myself included) know that the claim that a transcoded movie is 'not dvd quality' is hogwash. Most original DVDs have an avg bitrate of anywhere between 4.5-5.5k, with spikes up to 10.02k. The amount I transcode (if done properly) is therefore minimal, and unless I zoom in on it (which makes a movie particularly unwatchable, by the way) one can't even tell the difference! Then again, I know how to transcode properly. One who didn't might not agree with me that there's minute quality loss, and I guess he'd be right because in his/her particular instance there would be.

You don't know what you're talking about.

I re-encoded star wars episode 2. Brought the DVD-R over to a friend's house and we watched it on his Sony 50 inch HDTV monitor. Noone realized it was re-encoded, and even though I knew it was, I couldn't really see any quality issues. It looked great!!!

I've done SVCD before, and the quality on those is crap...so I think anyone comparing the two doesn't know what they're talking about.

I guess is not only me the one that don't understand your post, if you feeling the heat is because you need to be more precise on how you post.
To top the issue is actually moderator's the one's pointing the same thing I think Im reading in your post; in a nutshell there is a huge difference from SVCD and DVD+R/DVD-R.:D

Yeah Yeah and what is your age ???? the make everybody modarator at these days....(don't get personall.....i don't).....now i do...:D

Maybe i'm just a bit more critical when it comes to filmquality....

@Ramutan

Well i'll try oncemore......

Why do a compress when DVDmedia get's chaeper every week even DVD10
Look at the power (costs) you need to do a compress and work when for less then a dollar you have a DVDR...

I don't wanted to start a lame post or something....and i DONT feel any heat......LMAO.....you are funny......

But lets get back ontopic this is getting way out of line....(and this was not my intension)
